What President Trump has done with social security so far

Since President Donald Trump was sworn in on January 20, he proposed an ambitious program, including several key changes that could have an impact on the way in which social security administration works.

During Trump's joint address at the Congress, he drew attention to his efforts in the first weeks of his second term. He covered a wide range of subjects and described his plans for the next four years, especially investigating what he said is fraud and waste within the Social Security program.

In 2025, around 73 million Americans will receive Social Security, additional security income (SSI), or both, according to the Social Security Administration, with nearly 1.6 Billion of Dollars of services paid per year. Trump's agenda could have a direct impact on Social Security, an important source of income for most people over 65. However, the program is on slippery ground and will have to reduce the advantages in ten years if the congress does not change its finances.

Although he is still early in his second term, here is what Trump has done so far with Social Security. (A separate story examines what Trump has done with Medicare so far).

Trump operates Lee Dudek as a new Acting Social Security Commissioner (SSA)

President Trump appointed Leland “Lee” Dudek as the acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration after Michelle King resigned. Dudek was previously a main advisor in the Bureau of the Integrity of the SSA Program. He had also worked as a management analyst and advisor in the anti-fraud social security office. Dudek will fulfill the role pending confirmation from the Senate for Trump's choice to direct the agency, FISERV CEO, Frank Bisignano.

Trump plans to implement the Social Security equity law as quickly as possible

Social Security Administration recently announced that it would start to pay retroactive services and increase the monthly payments of the benefits to more than 3.2 million people whose services were allocated by the disposition of the Channel elimination (WEP) and the statement of government pensions (GPO).

“The aggressive Social Security schedule to start issuing retroactive payments in February and increase the monthly payments of benefits from April supports President Trump's priority to implement the Social Security Equity Act as quickly as possible,” said Lee Dudek, an actual social security commissioner. “The agency's initial estimate to take a year or more will only apply for complex cases now that automation cannot treat. The American people deserves their advantages due as quickly as possible. »»

The administration gives Doge the green light

At the start of his administration, President Trump signed a decree creating the Ministry of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) and made Elon Musk a “employee of the special government”. Its role in the Ministry of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) now seems to focus on technology and federal staff with its declared objective of reducing public spending, waste and fraud, and to optimize the workforce.

In response to DOGE requests, Social Security Administration (SSA) has reduced its endowment target to 50,000 employees, against the current number of around 57,000. It also identified economy opportunities in grants, contracts, property and technology. According to the SSA, total savings should exceed $ 800 million during the year 2025.

This week, Social Security Administration (SSA) also started plans to make important discounts to its telephone services by eliminating telephone support for the processing of complaints and direct deposit account transactions. Instead, the agency has decided to make a closer review prohibiting direct changes by telephone.

SSA to close offices

In collaboration with DOGE, President Trump ordered the General Services Administration (GSA) to end leases on approximately 7,500 federal offices, including those of the Social Security Administration (SSA). Most offices are currently underused or closed. However, as the Social Security Administration is already at its lowest level of personnel in 25 years, closings raise questions about the accessibility of services for beneficiaries.

Trump does not double any social security tax

During his campaign, President Trump wrote on social networks: “Seniors should not pay social security tax”. He doubled this promise during his joint speech in the congress. Trump did not call for any tax on advice, without tax on overtime and without tax on social security benefits, stressing that reduction in waste and fraud would help reduce inflation, balance the budget and strengthen the economy – although some states are always beneficiaries.

Trump says he will not reduce social security benefits

“The Trump administration will not reduce the benefits of social security, health insurance or medicaid,” the White House said in a press release. “President Trump himself said (again and again).”

Trump wants to reduce inflation, which will have an impact

The drop in inflation can have a positive effect on life adjustments (Colas) by stabilizing prices. This, in turn, can help maintain the purchasing power of wages. However, the recent prices offered by Trump can temporarily increase inflation, complicating efforts to make lower collars.

Trump represses immigration

President Trump has published several decrees related to the application of immigration across the border. Although just speculation at this stage, a repression of immigration could potentially reduce the supply of labor in certain industries, which could lead to higher prices for certain products and higher inflation, affecting social security workers.
