Oil prices increased on Monday after President Donald Trump said the United States would hold Iran responsible for any future Houthi attack, a militant group in Yemen who launched missile strikes on commercial expedition to the Red Sea and Israel.

US crude crude oil contracts increased by 40 cents, or 0.6%to $ 67.58 per barrel. The world reference Brent exchanged 44 cents, or 0.62%, at $ 71.02 per barrel.

Trump’s threat occurs after the United States has launched a new wave of air strikes against Houthis over the weekend. Defense secretary Pete Hegseth said on Sunday that the American campaign will continue until the militant group interrupts its attacks.

“This campaign concerns the freedom of navigation and recovery of deterrence,” Hegseth told Fox News Sunday Morning Futures. “As soon as the Houthis say that we stop shooting your ships, we will stop shooting your drones, this campaign will end. But until then, it will be relentless.”

The Houthis began to target commercial navigation crossing the Red Sea at the end of 2023 in support of Hamas, after the Palestinian militant group launched a surprise attack against southern Israel and Israel responded with a field and air campaign in Gaza. The Houthis and Hamas are both allies to Iran.

Houthi missile strikes have forced international maritime companies to reachment the container ships that would normally pass through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

Trump has reintegrated a “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran in order to descend the oil exports from the Islamic Republic. The Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, recently said that the Trump administration’s objective was to collapse the Iranian economy.

The White House thinks that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, an allegation that the Islamic Republic denies. Trump's national security advisor Mike Waltz said on Sunday that “all options are on the table” to make sure Iran do not acquire a nuclear bomb.

“We cannot have a situation that would lead to an arms race through the Middle East in terms of nuclear proliferation,” said Waltz on “this week” of ABC.

Trump said he wanted to negotiate a nuclear agreement with Iran. In 2018, the president withdrew the United States from the nuclear agreement negotiated by President-Barack Obama, an agreement called the full action plan.
