Thousands of people in Türkiye went down to the street on Thursday to protest against the detention of the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu.
Preventing imamoglu from introducing itself to the president of Turkey would only strengthen support for the opposition, Ozgur Ozel of the Republican People's Party (CHP), the main opposition party of Turkey. Ozel said Imamoglu had been placed in police custody because he represented a threat for more than two decades by President Rece Tayyip Erdogan.
According to Ozel, who spoke in an interview with Reuters, any candidate would beat Erdogan in fair elections.
“We believe that Imamoglu will win. If his candidacy is blocked, we believe that this will turn into much more important support,” he said.

Imamoglu was considered the main rival of Erdogan and ahead of the president in certain polls. He had to announce his intention to go to the presidential elections.
“We, as a nation, must stand against this evil. This is my call,” published Imamoglu on X in a message transmitted via his lawyers.
Critics see the repression of the voices of the opposition as an Erdogan attempt to consolidate his position as leader in the country.
Turkish government officials rejected the complaint that the arrests were politically motivated.
Erdogan called on Thursday the opposition to “theaters” and “slogans” criticisms and a waste of time in the country.

Ozel also said he thought that Erdogan would break all the ties that the Turkish opposition had with Istanbul by appointing a trustee to lead the largest city in Turkey.
The opposition plans to react by organizing the “strongest democratic reaction” to such a decision, Ozel said.
Ozel spoke of the municipal seat of Istanbul, where he said that he would remain until the liberation of Imamoglu.
Imamoglu was arrested on Wednesday due to charges of transplant and aid to a terrorist group, the opposition qualifying the move “attempted coup”. The arrest triggered demonstrations nationally despite a four -day ban on demonstrations in the city.

According to prosecutors, Imamoglo is accused of having abused his financial gain position. In another investigation, Imamoglu is accused of having helped the Kurdistan workers' party (PKK), considered a terrorist organization in Turkey, the United States and other countries, allegedly forming an alliance with Kurdish groups for the municipal elections of Istanbul.
Other arrests have also been made, including two mayors in the Istanbul district.

The Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya also said that the authorities had arrested dozens of people for sharing “provocative” content on social networks related to the mayor's arrest.
Yerlikaya said that of 261 accounts of social media identified by the Turkish authorities would have encouraged hatred or public crime, 37 suspects were held, 62 other accounts based abroad.
The detention of the mayor of Istanbul also sparked comments from Germany.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the arrest of “very, very bad sign” for Turkey's relations with the European Union.
“We can only ask that this ends immediately and that the opposition and the government stand in competition with each other, and not the opposition translated into justice,” said Scholz.
