The Canadian's purchase trend has created a silver lining for a food bank in Nanaimo, British Columbia, which was flooded hundreds of kilograms of American products.
Peter Sinclair, Executive Director of the Community Food Bank of Loaves & Fishes, says that a food recovery program allows them to accept excess or unsold articles from their grocery partners and wholesalers.
He says that when discussions on prices between Canada and the United States began, they saw a leap in donations from American products, from chou-splery to lettuce.
Sinclair says that they do not normally follow the country of origin for given food, but their warehouse manager estimated around 300 to 400 kilograms of American products, compared to what is normal.
The boom lasted five weeks before it started to hang out last week, a downward trend which, according to Sinclair, may be due to retailers adjusting their purchases to correspond to what Canadians want.
Dan Huang-Taylor, Executive Director of Food Banks BC, says that it is not surprising because when he makes the grocery store, he sees many of us marked because “clearly, they do not sell”.
Huang-Taylor says he is concerned about the moment when the impact of American prices is starting to cause prices overvoltages to the grocery store, which will make life less affordable for Canadians.
“We believe that the price will make things much more difficult for people, so we plan that more people need to access food banks in the months and years to come.”
