Puan swings of Jokowi-Pdip Rift, calls “always warm” links
Jakarta. The politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI-P), Puan Maharani, minimized the tensions between his party and the former president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, insisting that the relationship remains intact despite a year of political upheavals.
“Always warm, still,” said Puan on Friday when he attended a refined event organized by the National Democratic Party (Nasdem) at his head office in Jakarta on Friday.
His remarks come in a context of persistent speculation on an in-depth fracture between PDI-P and Jokowi, in particular after the party officially expelled him in December 2024 with his son, vice-president Gibran Rakabum Rakabum, and his son-in-law, the Medanic Mayor Bobby Nasution. The division culminated in the eviction of Jokowi of PDI-P last year, but the former president took a conciliatory tone in January, congratulating the party for his 52nd anniversary. Whether his message was an olive branch or a simple formality remains uncertain.
For Puan, the accent is now on the future. Earlier this week, she urged all parties to drop division stories. “Let's finish this speculation. Armotons the division and unnecessary suspicions,” she told the House of Representatives on Monday. It called for national unity, stressing that the reconstruction of Indonesia requires collective efforts.
Ramadan, she added, should be a moment of reflection rather than political struggles. “It's a moment to think positively and build the nation together,” she said. But if PDI-P and Jokowi can really be reconciled remains an open question.
