Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]March 22 (Ani): the deputy for Shiv Sena, Milind Deora, congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday on obesity. He also said that he had urged the Minister of Health, JP Nadda, to take action to control obesity and prevent a potential obesity crisis in India.
“First of all, I thank Prime Minister Narendra Moda for launching a national obesity campaign. Inspired by this campaign, when discussions took place on the health budget, I urged the Minister of Health JP Nadda and I gave several suggestions to the government to control obesity and to ensure that there is no obesity crisis in India,” he said on Friday.
Deora highlighted the role of sugar products and drinks up the levels of obesity. He suggested that increasing taxation on these products by TPS or other means could be dissuasive.
“Today, sugar companies sell sugar drinks and sugar products. If we can increase taxation on the same thing thanks to TPS or other taxes, this will become a deterrence for those who buy this product,” he said.
He also called for the ban on advertisements by sugar companies that target children, citing international examples.
“I suggested that the advertisements of sugar societies that aim for children should be prohibited across the country. Countries like Singapore have completely banned the advertisements of sugar companies that target children,” said Deora.
“In the coming days, I will meet the Minister of Health JP Nadda, and I am sure that in the obesity campaign that was launched by the Prime Minister, it will be an important step,” he added.
Earlier this month, when it was addressed to a rally in Daman and Diu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the question of obesity and urged people to reduce their consumption of cooking oil by 10%.
“The Prime Minister responded to the growing concern of lifestyle diseases, in particular obesity, which has become an important threat to health and has referred to a recent report predicting that by 2050, more than 440 million Indians will suffer from obesity.
He urged people to take proactive measures to combat obesity and suggested reducing the consumption of cooking oil by 10% each month.
