Violent clashes broke out in several cities in Turkey between opposition supporters and state security forces for a second day, while demonstrators demand the release of the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu, according to Turkish videos and reports.
Police from the capital Ankara and Istanbul have pulled tear gas and used water cannons to disperse gathering demonstrators, social media videos and local media in Türkiye.
Turkish authorities have arrested an Imamoglu a key political rival to the president Recep Tayyip Erdogan Wednesday, as part of corruption and terrorism surveys. Detention orders were also made for around 100 others linked to the mayor, including his press advisor Murat Ongun, according to the press agency published by the Anadolu Agency State on Wednesday.
Friday demonstrations follow several violent bodies Thursday. At least 16 police officers were injured during clashes with demonstrators across Turkey on Thursday, according to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, and at least 53 people were detained. It is not known how many demonstrators were injured during the ongoing demonstrations.

Demonstrations by university students have also gathered steam in Ankara and Izmir, where the prohibition is also in force.
Imamoglu was elected mayor in 2019 and again in 2024. The next presidential vote is scheduled for 2028, but some analysts say that Erdogan could ask early elections, This would allow him to bypass the limits of the term.
