Merauke residents protest against Vice Minister of H

One of the representatives of the Aboriginal community of Merauke transmitted a demonstration before the Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiganto Sipin, on March 14, 2025. He said that the government seemed to be reluctant to take measures against human rights violations in Merauke. According to him, the National Strategic Project (PSN) of Merauke caused the suffering of the indigenous community.

The demonstration was delivered during the consolidation event of the solidarity of Merauke, which was held at Petrus Vertenten MSC Center on Jalan Raya Cigombong, Kelapa Lima Village, Merauke District, South Papua, from March 11 to 14, 2025. In response to the Protest, Mugianto declared that he would transmit the contribution of the community and the coordinates relevant tiny and the effects concerning the PSN.

Merauke’s solidarity consolidation event brought together more than 250 people, including representatives of NGOs and Aboriginal communities affected by the PSN through Indonesia. The Assistant NGOs included Benta Pusaka, Ylbhi, Walhi, the alliance of the Aboriginal peoples of the archipelago (Aman), Trend Asia, KPA and LBH.

The event also included representatives of the communities affected by the food project in the north of Sumatra, the center of Kalimantan, Keerom in Papua, Merauke and Mappi in the South Papua. In addition, the communities affected by the PSN Répang Eco City project in the Riau Islands and the project of the capital of Nusantara (IKN) in eastern Kalimantan were also present.

Other participants included the victims of the PSN geothermal project at Poco Leok, East Nusa Tenggara and the Projects of the Extractive Industry for Energy Plantations and Bioenergy in Jambi. The communities affected by the PSN in the bay of Fakfak and Bintuni in Western Papua, as well as those affected by the expansion of the planting of palm oil through Papua, also participated.

Merauke, the host of the consolidation event, is currently faced with the expansion of the PSN involving the release of 2 million hectares of land. This project, initiated with President Joko Widodo, is now prosecuted by President Prabowo Subianto. The release of large -scale land has had a significant impact on indigenous communities and constitutes a threat to the sustainability of the forests of Papua.

The PSN has been implemented in various regions of Indonesia since 2016. Since then, many problems have occurred because the project has moved indigenous communities from their customary lands. In addition, the PSN has caused a large degradation of the environment and forests.

A report by the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) indicates that the PSN has led to various forms of human rights violations. The project has also bypassed many legal standards and regulations, resulting in the obstruction and violation of human rights.

The implementation of the PSN was carried out without involving local communities, finally triggering agrarian conflicts. The repressive approach in areas of PSN conflict has further added human rights violations to Indonesia to the file.
