Police question arrested the mayor of Istanbul for a second day while the demonstrations will intensify

The mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, appeared before the police for questioning the accusations related to terrorism on Saturday, one day after his interrogation on allegations of corruption.

The Turkish Minister of the Interior, Ali Yerlikaya, said that 343 suspects had been detained during demonstrations across the country on Friday evening, adding: “There will be no tolerance for those who seek to violate societal order, threaten the peace and security of the people and pursue chaos and provocation.”

Local media reported that the police interviewed Imamoglu for about five hours in the course of an investigation into the allegations to help the Kurdistan Out-La-Loi worker party of PKK. Friday, he was questioned for four hours on allegations of corruption.

Just before being transferred to the courthouse, local authorities closed the nearby roads and a large number of police officers were sent to the region.

Imamoglu is a popular opposition figure and considered a major challenger by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He was detained Wednesday After a dawn raid on his residence for allegations of financial crimes and links with Kurdish activists.

The mayor denied all the charges that were brought to him during the two interrogations.

Many consider arrest as a politically motivated attempt to remove a popular opposition figure and a key challenger to Erdogan during the next presidential race, currently scheduled for 2028.

His arrest triggered demonstrations that have regularly increased in intensity.

On Friday, Istanbul police used peppery gas, tear gas and rubber bullets to repel hundreds of demonstrators who tried to unravel a barricade in front of the historic aqueduct of cities while launching enlightening rockets, stones and other objects in officers.

Government representatives reject the accusations according to which legal actions against opposition personalities are politically motivated and insist that the courts of turkeys work independently.
