Ensure that the delimitation does not reduce the representation of the State: Jagan exhorts PM Modi
YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy drew a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday requesting that the delimitation exercise is carried out so that no state is faced with a reduction in his representation (number of seats) in Parliament.
Stressing that the delimitation exercise would have an enormous impact on not only the political representation of some of the states in policies and legislation, but would also affect the deep feelings of large sections of the country, the former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh said that it should be carried out with extreme caution.
He stressed that several states, including the southern states, fear that their representation would be reduced after the delimitation exercise, if this is done on the basis of the population.
“I draw your attention to the potential of significant erosion of the participation of southern states in national development and to a legislative process if the delimitation process takes place on the basis of the population of states with regard today,” said the letter of the YSRCP leader.
While thanking the Minister of the Interior of the Union, Amit Shah, for his assurance that the exercise of delimitation would be undertaken while being aware of the need to ensure the proportional increase in all the seats of the States, the former chief minister cited the constitutional obstacle to such relaxation.
“Under article 81, paragraph 2, a) of the Constitution, a certain number of seats will be attributed to each State in the House of inhabitants so that the relationship between this number and the population of the State is, with regard to the same way, or the same for all states”, indicates the letter.
Affirming that the question has the potential to “disturb” social and political harmony in the country, he asked for the orientation and insurance of the PM Modi to “appease the fears” of the southern states.
In particular, the chief of the DMK and chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, during a meeting at all parties in Chennai, demanded that the 1971 census remains the basis of the attribution of seats by delimitation, affirming that the current difference in the North-South population would make them lose several seats in Parliament.
