Demonstrations break out in Türkiye after the arrest of the mayors of Istanbul; Prez Erdogan gushes repression
Istanbul: demonstrations broke out in several Turkish cities on Friday while thousands of people gathered against the arrest of the mayor of Istanbuls, Ekrem Imamoglu, a leading opposition figure and a key rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Despite the severe Erdogans warning that street demonstrations would not be tolerated, troubles have spread throughout the country, causing violent clashes with the police.
In Istanbul, hundreds of demonstrators gathered near the city's historic aqueduct, trying to unravel the police barricades. The security forces responded with peppery gas, tear gas and rubber bullets while the demonstrators threw enlightening rockets, stones and other objects.
Similar demonstrations have been divided to Ankara, the capital, as well as in the coastal city of the Izmir Entreale, where the authorities have used energetic measures, according to images disseminated by the Private Halk TV.
In several other cities, thousands of people have worked, calling on the government to resign. At least 97 people were detained nationally, said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, according to AP.

Imamoglu was arrested early Wednesday morning during a dawn raid at his residence. The authorities accused him of alleged corruption and links with terrorist organizations, accusations which he has firmly denied. Several other opposition figures, including two district mayors, have also been held as part of the repression.
The mayor should appear before prosecutors on Saturday evening. Many consider his arrest as an attempt at political motivation to put a major challenger to Erdogan before the presidential election in 2028. However, government representatives reject the allegations that legal actions against opposition figures are politically motivated, insisting that the Turkish courts operate independently.
The chief of the turkey opposition, Ozgur Ozel, urged citizens to take to the streets in peaceful demonstrations. Addressing a large rally outside the town hall of Istanbuls, he accused Erdogan of using the judiciary as a weapon against political rivals. I invite tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands and millions to demonstrate peacefully, express our democratic reaction and exercise our constitutional rights, said Ozel, according to AP.
Erdogan promises to crush the troubles
President Erdogan rejected accusations of political persecution, rather framing demonstrations as an attempt to destabilize the country.
An anti-corruption operation in Istanbul is used as an excuse to stir the troubles in our streets, said Erdogan. I want it to be known that we do not allow a handful of opportunists to bring trouble to Turkey just to protect their looting patterns.
He also accused the opposition figures of having links with corruption and terrorist organizations, warning that the government would not tolerate street demonstrations.
