Luxon “really proud” of the NZ delegation trip to India
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says that he is “really proud” of the achievements of the New Zealand delegation to India, one of the most important in history in the country, after a productive trip.
The five-day trip, where he had bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, began with the revival of free trade negotiations between the two countries. The first series of negotiations is expected to start next month.
“It really succeeded; these are two countries that should actually do much more together,” said Luxon.
“I think what you have seen is a projection of the two Prime Ministers to our trade ministers and our teams who, in fact, we want to make an agreement.”
The negotiations had already started in 2010 under the government of John Key, but blocked questions such as market access.
New Zealand has looked for more access to the Dairy Market in India, which it has traditionally protected to support farmers.
An agreement involving dairy products remained a sensitive subject, but Luxon said it was a challenge that New Zealand had identified as crucial.
