Carly-Ann Turner spent the morning unloading a large delivery for the Lincolnshire cooperative.
But five years ago, the daily bases such as pasta, toilet rolls and milk were in a much shorter supply, because supermarkets attended a wave of panic purchase.
“Obviously, tensions were high,” she recalls.
“The changes arrived very, very quickly and everyone was worried and frustrated not to be able to make the purchases they wanted.”
She remembers closing the entrance doors of the Coningsby catering store to limit the number of buyers and the anger of some who had to queue outside for a long time.
A colleague was reduced to tears by a glaring client.
“They really upset her.
“As a key worker, you are obviously there in front of people, so when [the customers] are frustrated, they will remove it from you. “”
But the biggest struggle of Carly-Ann was forced to keep her distance from the older and regular buyers she had always helped.
“It was a massive change for everyone. You really get to know your customers, so it was really difficult not to be able to interact with them in the same way as usual.
“Sometimes we are the only person they saw in a day, so having to greet them behind a mask was really difficult, trying to communicate with some people when they could not read the lips and we had smothered voices.”
The plastic screens still in place at Till are a locking reminder, but a Carly-Ann heritage welcomes.
“I like this little protection, just daily germs.
“Being a key worker was probably one of the most difficult things I will do. But it made me feel that if I could go through there, then I could do anything.
