New Delhi: The Indian Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, revealed that Bangladesh's request for a meeting between the acting chief advisor Muhammad Yunus, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the next Bimstec summit is envisaged. Eam Jaishankar would have announced this before a parliamentary panel on Saturday. The latest development appeared in the midst of increasing tensions between the two nations, in particular with regard to recent attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh.
Several deputies, including KC Venugopal, Manish Tewari, Priyanka Chaturvedi and Mukul Wasnik, raised concerns about the targeted murders of the Hindus in Bangladesh during the parliamentary advisory committee for the meeting of external affairs. Jaishankar informed members that the interim government of Dacca said that attacks against Hindus were “politically motivated” and not “the targeted minority”. However, this explanation did not do much to relieve the concerns of the Indian legislators.
Jaishankar informed deputies about India's ties with Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, highlighting the complexities of relations. He also said that Saarc was inactive due to Pakistan's approach, which prompted India to strengthen Bimstec (Bengal Bay initiative for multisectoral technical and economic cooperation). Experts consider the stage as a strategic decision, an attempt to counterbalance the influence of Pakistan in the region.

SUMMIT BIMSTEC
The Bimstec summit, scheduled for Bangkok from April 2 to 4, should be a crucial meeting for India and Bangladesh. Jaishankar said that Prime Minister Modi could attend the summit, although a final decision is still to be taken. The meeting between Modi and Yunus, if it takes place, will be closely monitored, given the current tensions between the two nations.
First meeting of the 2025 advisory committee for external affairs
The Minister of External Affairs recently concluded the first meeting of the 2025 advisory committee for external affairs, focusing on India's relations with its neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. During the meeting, several deputies, including KC Venugopal, Manish Tewari, Priyanka Chaturvedi and Mukul Wasnik, raised concerns about the targeted murders of the Hindus in Bangladesh and asked what the government was doing to stop them. Jaishankar assured them that the government was engaged in the temporary exemption from Bangladesh at different levels and had raised the issue, which would continue to be prosecuted.

Other discussion issues
During the meeting, another key problem, which was discussed, was the means of subsistence of fishermen. MPs in southern India have raised concerns about the problems encountered by fishermen in Sri Lanka. In addition to fishermen's problems, members also discussed the issue of drugs and smuggling weapons in India since Pakistan and Myanmar, Jaishankar declaring that the government actively tackled the issue.
Jaishankar expressed his gratitude to participating deputies, including P Margherita, Manish Tewari, Vaiko and Priyanka Chaturvedi, for their active participation in the meeting. The discussion was preceded by a detailed presentation on India's relations with Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maldives and Sri Lanka by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vikram Mistry.
