Mayor of the Turkish Court Istanbul, the main political rival of Erdoan – Politico
On Sunday, a Turkish court imprisoned on Sunday the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Mamolu, the best political rival of President Tayyip Erdoan, despite generalized demonstrations against his detention and the allegations against him.
Prosecutors accused Mamolu of corruption and aid to a terrorist group, saying that he was suspected of having led a criminal organization. He awaits his trial for these accusations.
Detention ordinances have also been made for nearly 100 people linked to Mamolu, including his press advisor, Murat ONGUN, CNN cited local anadolu media as a report.
Mamolu was elected mayor of Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey in 2019 and again in 2024. He is the probable presidential candidate of the republican opposition party. The party said the charges held against him were politically motivated, describing them as an attempted coup.
