Republican senator John Curtis laughs at the idea of supporting the third term Donald Trump

Senator John Curtis, a Utah Republican, laughed at the idea of supporting a third term for President Donald Trump during an interview on Sunday.
Newsweek contacted the White House to comment by e-mail on Sunday.
Why it matters
Trump and his allies have repeatedly tackled the idea of seeking him a third term, despite most legal analysts agreeing that this would violate the American Constitution because all American presidents are limited to two terms, with Trump now in his second and last mandate.
Calls for Trump to be authorized to arise for a third term followed by the warnings issued by the Democrats during the 2024 campaign that he would govern once authoritarian in the White House. However, the former Trump administration official Steve Bannon, who hosts a popular right -wing podcast, suggested in an interview with Newsnation last week that it is a real option on the table.
What to know
Curtis appeared on NBC News's Meet The Press organized by Kristen Welker on Sunday. The journalist underlined the recent comments from Bannon, asking the senator: “Is there a scenario where you would support a third term for President Trump, who is not legal under the Constitution?”
Curtis quickly rejected the possibility.
“I would not have supported a third term for George Washington,” he replied, laughing. “It's a no, yes,” he added, still groaning the suggestion.
Washington was the first American president, who moved away after two terms, despite some supporters who urged him to run for a third. This established a precedent, followed by most presidents until the American Constitution was modified via the 22nd amendment in 1951.
The 22nd amendment reads as follows: “No one will be elected to the president's office more than twice, and no one who has held the post of president, or acted as president, for more than two years of a mandate to which another person was elected president will be elected to the post of president more than once.”
Some have suggested unconventional paths to make Trump by the constitution, because the repeal of the amendment would be almost impossible given the current political dynamics. An idea floated by some is that Trump is the vice-presidential candidate, then the one who is president could withdraw after winning.
However, legal analysts believe that even it would be constitutionally tenuous and would probably be blocked by the United States Supreme Court. Others have warned that Trump could simply ignore the Constitution and stay just in office, without a clear way to force him to get out.
Trump, in an interview in April 2024 with Time Magazine, said that he would not be in favor of the change in the 22nd amendment.
“I wouldn't be at all in favor of that. I intend to serve four years and do an excellent job. And I want to bring our country back. I want to put it back on the right track,” he said.

Steve Bannon in Newsnation last week: “I am firmly convinced that President Trump will run and win again in 2028, so I already approved President Trump. A man like this one arrives once every century, if we are lucky. We are now.”
Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani in Newsweek said on Thursday: “Apart from the potential flaw of the vice-president, there is no legal path for Trump to take place for a third term. Politically, he does not have the votes to repeal the 22nd amendment, nor in the Congress or in the States.”
Representative Dan Goldman, a New York Democrat, previously said in Newsweek in a January declaration: “To date, Donald Trump's model is predictable:` `joke '' on something unconstitutional or authoritarian; normalize the` `joke ''; allow the republicans sycophanics to adopt '` `joke' 'as a serious idea Orthodoxy. “
What happens next?
Trump and his allies should continue to float the idea of another term. Although it is not clear what extraordinary actions the president could possibly do to make the idea a reality, most legal analysts believe that there is no constitutionally viable path.
