President Donald Trump demands “high -speed apologies” from the Governor of Maine Janet Mills about their brief exchange but tense last month on transgender athletes.

Trump made the request on Saturday in an article on Truth Social.

“While the state of Maine apologized for their strong, but totally incorrect governors, on men playing in women at women at the Conference of Governors of the White House, we did not hear the governor herself, and it is she who counts in such cases,” wrote Trump on the social media platform.

“Consequently, we need full-fledged extensions of the governor herself, and a statement that she will never make an illegal challenge to the federal government, before this case could be settled,” said Trump. “I'm sure she can do it quite easily.”

The Mill office did not immediately respond to Trump's request to apologize.

Trump referred to his interaction on February 21 with Mills at a bipartite meeting with governors in the White House. Towards the end of his long remarks to the group, Trump began to talk about his recent decree prohibiting men from participating in sports for girls or women.

Trump then asked if the Maine’s governor was present and asked Mills if Maine would comply with the decree. A few days earlier, a legislator of the republican state had drawn national attention to Maine on social networks by publishing photos and the name of a transgender athlete of the school who had won a female track championship.

Mills told Trump that Maine followed state and federal laws.

Well, we are federal law, Trump told Mills. You better do it. You better do so, because you will not get any federal funding at all if you don't.

The tense exchange made the front page of the national newspapers and created a buzz in democratic circles because, at the time, many party activists accused party leaders not to do more to resist Trump.

Mills have been relatively calm and has largely avoided the media since the White House exchange.
