American legislators push the bill to request sanctions against the Pakistani army chief, ask for the release of Imran Khans

A bipartite bill presented at the US Congress aims to impose sanctions on the Pakistani army chief, General Asim Munnir, for his presumed role in the persecution of political opponents, including the former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The hill reported that the legislation, entitled “Pakistan Democracy Act”, was presented by representatives Joe Wilson (RS.C.) and Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.). The bill provides for sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.

The bill obliges the American government to identify, within 180 days, the individuals involved in political persecution in Pakistan and impose penalties such as visa prohibitions and entry restrictions in the United States. He specifically accuses of “knowingly engaging in the unjustified persecution and imprisonment of political opponents” and calls for similar measures against others involved in repression.

Joe Wilson was vocal in his calls for the release of Khans and has always demanded an action against the Pakistan soldiers, holding them responsible for his “unfair detention”. “Mr. Khan is clearly a political prisoner,” Wilson told The Hill. He also declared that he had written to Donald Trump, asking him to “put pressure on the military leaders of the Pakistans, including by prohibition of visa, to restore democracy and release Mr. Khan”.

The members of the Congress of the two parties pleaded for the release of Khans, while he continues to face several accusations following his withdrawal from his duties in 2022. Khan was ousted by a vote without confidence and subsequently arrested for accusations of corruption in August 2023.
