Erdogan blames the opposition for the movement of violence while the demonstrations against the mayors in imprisonment degenerate
Massive demonstrations continued for a sixth consecutive day through Turkey following the imprisonment of the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu, President Recep Tayyip Erdogans political rival, while the president accused the opposition of incentive to violence and to judge that they would be held responsible.
Imamoglu, of the opposition republican people (CHP) party (CHP) was imprisoned on Sunday while waiting for corruption accusations, arousing generalized outcry and incited hundreds of thousands of demonstrators to flood the streets in major Turkish cities. Imamoglu and his party insist that the accusations are politically motivated, an affirmation that the Erdogan government denies.
In a speech Monday after a meeting of the cabinet in Ankara, Erdogan qualified the demonstrations of movement of violence triggered by the provocation of the opposition.
“As a nation, we surprised the events that emerged after the main leader of the opposition leading to the streets after a corruption operation based in Istanbul, said Erdogan. “The main opposition is responsible for our injured police officers, broken windows from our traders and damaged public goods. They will be held politically responsible for the Parliament and legally by the judiciary. ”
Earlier, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported 1,133 arrests during demonstrations and said 123 police officers were injured in demonstrations with demonstrators.
Despite a national ban on public rallies imposed by the Turkish authorities, the chief of the CHP, Ozgur Ozel, urged continuous peaceful demonstrations. Addressing large crowds in Istanbul, Ozel said that the charges against Imamoglu were “baseless” and called on the Imamoglus trial to spread live. He also challenged Erdogan to a television debate.
