Hospice de St Richard: Life in locking as a nurse in palliative care
Sue Thurston found that the most difficult period of Her23-16-16's career whose Richard's hospice had a Richard hospice.

For these first weeks, Ms. Thurston, who used to see patients and help families in person, was limited to telephone and video calls.
“It was quite difficult,” she said.
“We had very afflicted patients who felt very alone, but they were also afraid of having someone in their house because of Covid.
“If you speak to many nurses, they will say that one of the things they will never forget is the look in the eyes of the patients, especially if they had a covid.”
Finally, the hospice was able to get Epi Gethold, so the community team was transformed into a quick response team that would make people who were at the end of their lives at any time.
“We had to put the PPE, the mask, the glasses, the costume, at the front door before entering,” said Ms. Thurston, “we could sometimes be in households with patients and their families for hours, especially if they died.
“We will stay with them until they died and I think that one of the most difficult things was to tell the family that their loved one went to a body bag, it would be sealed and that they would not see them again.
“It still upsets me to this day. It was heartbreaking.”
Ms. Thurston and her team worked 12 hours of work, but often found themselves working for more than 16 hours due to the security protocols in place to limit the spread of the virus.

Despite the dangers of work and the difficulties that have been confronted with him, as well as her colleagues, Ms. Thurston never hesitated to her commitment to her patients: “We knew that we were in danger, but you have a duty of diligence and your patients come first.
“A soldier who is invited to go to battle knows that there is a risk of injury, but they always go, and I felt, as an infirmer, I had the same duty.”
Ms. Thurstonrefled on the psychological effect that the pandemic had on her and the people around her.
She said: “I have done palliative care for 23 years, and I think the first lock was the most emotionally challenged that I have ever been.
“It is difficult to describe the distress of our patient, their families, but also of the staff; it was like losing a loved one every day.”
And, years after the lifting of restrictions, the events of 2020 and 2021 always have an effect to date: “I would also say that we are still not physically back to the place where we were before the pandemic.
“I think that had a long -term impact on many nurses, no matter where they worked. We never had this time to recover physically and mentally.”
