After the release of Dejoys, the USPS unions are wary of Trump's reshuffle to the agency

The former post owner, Louis Dejoy, avoided several third rail problems, as part of his plans to modernize the postal service, including the privatization of the agency, the closure of post offices or the reduction in the number of delivery days per week.
The leaders of three USPS unions say that they are not so sure that the successor of Dejoy or the Trump administration will accept the same red lines, because the White House envisages major changes for the independent messaging agency.
President Donald Trump developed the possibility of privatizing the USPS during a press conference in December, an idea he considered during his first mandate. More recently, Trump said that the trade of departure planning to take control of the USP.
“We have an administration of the White House which openly speaks of privatizing the public postal service La Vendant, reducing it to private companies for a private profit. Everything people thought of Louis Dejoy, he did not prove himself as a privatizer,” said the president of the American postal workers Mark Dimondstein on Tuesday at the National Press Club. “I believe that Louis Dejoy was expelled by this administration to help open the way for some of their plans.”

The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that the Trump administration had accelerated the departure of Dejoy from the USPS.
Dejoy has established some of these borders with an incoming team from the Ministry of Effectiveness of the Government. In one of his letters at the Congress, Dejoy said that Doge's members would have limited access to the agency data and said the team was not intended to “make the organization more suitable for privatization”.
Dejoy left the agency on Monday, after announcing its plans for its departure last month.
Postal unions have led gatherings across the country, pushing a privatized USP. Postal service is the largest unionized employer in the United States
Dimondstein said that Dejoy “generally respected unions”, although APWU, in some cases, has expressed its concerns about its 10 -year delivery plan for America.
“You have natural disagreements, arguments and differences,” he said.
Dimondstein attributed to Dejoy for having created a “better way” so that the employees of the Pre-Carrier USPS go to career positions with better salary and benefits.
]]> Unions are wary of USPS privatization
Don Maston, president of the National Union of Transporters of Rural Letters, said that a disproportionate “deprivalized” USPS would have an impact on our rural communities “.
“The composition of the Council of Governors will certainly have a lot of influence on who will be the next general postmaster, and how this person will see privatization, working with unions, continuing the delivery plan for America that Louis Dejoy began,” said Maston.
Four members of the USPS board of directors were appointed by former president Joe Biden, and two were chosen by President Donald Trump in his first term.
“Whoever the Council of Governors selects must be in harmony with the plan because it has already been designed and goes ahead,” said Maston.
Tameka Brown, president of Louisiana Rural Letter Carriers Association, said that the USPS is often a “rescue buoy” for rural customers.
“They depend on us, so it's more than just deliver the mail and the packages. We are a service for them,” said Brown.
The National Association of Transporters of Letters The President Brian Renfroe awarded Dejoy for having taken a “long” modernization of the USPS network.
“The devil, of course, is in detail, and although there are certainly parts of this effort over the years that have led to challenges of service and things like that, which we have worked very hard to approach, it is important, in a general sense, to continue to modernize postal service”, Renfroe
USPS under the mandate of DEJOY has opened new massive mail processing facilities across the country and has planned to operate trucks less often between these factories and post offices to transport the mail.

After the bipartisan decline in Congress, Dejoy agreed to put certain modifications of the modernization of networks on hold, at least until January 2025, after the drop in the USPS sawmill in the delivery of mail in time in the regions where he opened his first mega-treatment by regional mail.
“It is very important that it is modernized. It is very important that we are investigating in the infrastructure and whoever is the next general post office, in order to make such an investment, must make it number one with the service,” said Renfroe.
Dejoy has improved installations with equipment to treat the packages faster, in the hope of developing its package activity.
Before these changes, the USPS network remained practically unchanged for decades and was built to deliver mail and periodical products which earn less income for the USPS.
“We have noticed an increase in packages, so the growth of packages is very important for a dynamic future. But the same goes for new and improved services. The post office could do much more,” said Dimondstein.
Dejoy told legislators in a letter of December 2023 that the volume of total mail had dropped by 42% between 2007 and 2020, and that income dropped by 36%. “This trend will continue,” he wrote.
Despite positive financial results in the first quarter of the year 2025, the USPS posted a loss of almost $ 1.3 billion for February, according to its latest file with its regulator.
It is almost three times the net loss of $ 491 million that the USPS planned for this month, and almost quadruple the net loss of $ 377 million it saw in February 2024.
The agency's competitive volume is down 9.8% compared to the levels of February 2024, and more than 12% below its plan for this month.
Until now, USPS has experienced a net loss of $ 1.8 billion greater than the net loss of $ 1.33 billion which it projected at this stage of the year. He plans to finish the year with a net loss of $ 6.9 billion.
“Dead water” post office closures
Dejoy declared last week to legislators that the Doge team will help USPS examine its leases for 31,000 retail centers, including post offices.
More than half of all the current post offices, he said, fail to cover the cost of their local operations, and “the renewals of future leases will be even more difficult to support financially”, once leases of several decades expire.
Dimondstein said the message raises concerns that the USPS could consider closing certain post offices.
“There are certainly danger signals in this declaration. We oppose the closure of post offices,” said Dimonstein. “We are not set up to earn money in each post office. We are set up to break even as a whole. ”
RENFROE said that possible post office closings were a “big subject of conversation” when Dejoy began to write his 10 -year reform plan.
“Essentially, the message we sent was:” You are starting to try to close the post offices, you died in the water. “So whether it is Doge, a new leadership in the postal service or someone else, they are starting to try to close the post offices, they will have a hell of a fight as they never imagined,” said Renfroe.
Carissa Powell, a postal clerk in the Congress district of Washington, DC, said that many of its customers are older residents who live in a nearby senior center.
“It is their daily routine to come to the post office. Most of them are at a distance from walking,” said Powell. “If they close my post office, they will be devastated.”
As part of the 10 -year reform plan in Dejoy, the USPS has reduced its workforce by around 30,000 positions since the year 2021 and has been on the right track to reduce 10,000 early retirement buyout stations.
Dimondstein said that around 9,000 APWU members had taken the first retirement offers.
“This does not mean that all these people will not be replaced. Some of them will certainly have to be replaced and should be, and others cannot,” he said.
Renfroe said the union had had no interview with USPS on early retirement offers for letters. The current workman's workman, he added, is “well aligned with the work we do”.
“Any reduction in the endowment that we have directly involved in the service to the service and the possibility of delivering all the mail,” he said.
