During the campaign of the years to consolidate power, Chinese President Xi Jinping seems to have triggered the last purge cycle.

Why did the general disappear?

A senior defense official told the newspaper that he was a target of the XI campaign to withdraw those of the administration to whom he does not trust. The official suggested that Xi did not trust him and did not find him adequately engaged in the ideology.

As the Chinese army is essentially the CPC army wing, there is a system of political commissioners within the army. The commissioners are officers who guarantee the loyalty of the military to the CPC. They are accused of the political indoctrination of the staff so that they stick to the party line. The Times noted that, among the two vice-presidents of CPC, we are still a commissioner but he and his colleague vice-president, General Zhang Youxia, both came from operational circles and no longer a commissioner. Thus, the newspaper suggested that it was also linked to its ideological reason.

Many senior leaders have served

If he had indeed been purged, he would be the last senior figure to become the victim of XI.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Zhao Keshi, a former general, who headed the Department of Military Logistics, was arrested in a corruption case.

In November, Xi dismissed Admiral Miao Hua at the head of the CMC political work service.

In June 2024, the former defense ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe were expelled from the CPC. Li had already been dismissed as Minister of Defense in October 2023 after the disappearance of two months. He was accused of corruption. Wei had retired the previous year and had been accused of corruption and personally taking advantage of his official posts in the CPC.

In July 2023, the minister of the time, Qin Gang, was dismissed after the absence of a month in the sight of the public. No explanation was provided for dismissal. The holder, Wang Yi, replaced him.

Earlier this month, a report by the Office of the American National Intelligence Director (DNI) noted that Li and Miao were considered as “protégés” of XI and yet they were purged, “demonstrating the seriousness of the concerns of the CCPS concerning loyalty and efficiency”.
