The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FO) has minimized the question of a bipartite bill in the House of Representatives of the United States calling for sanctions against officials of the Pakistani State and said that it did not align themselves on the current positive dynamics of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The bill, entitled The Pakistan Democracy Act, for alleged human rights violations, including the persecution of the former Prime Minister Imran Khan, was presented on Monday by the member of the Republican Congress Joe Wilson of South Caroline and the Democrat Jimmy Panetta of California. He was returned to the Chamber of Foreign Affairs and Judicial Committees for new deliberations.

The proposed legislation calls for the taxation of sanctions to the Head of the Pakistani army within 180 days if the country does not take any measures to improve its situation in matters of human rights. The bill aims to use the US Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, which allows the United States to refuse visas and entry to individuals accused of human rights violations.

The bill also calls on the US administration to identify the key persons involved in the alleged abolition of the political opposition in Pakistan and to place them on a list of sanctions. Asked about the bill in his weekly press briefing today, the spokesperson for FO, Shafqat Ali Khan, stressed that it was an initiative of a single individual legislator.

He added: We believe that the time and context of the bill do not align well with the current positive dynamics of Pakistani bilateral relations based on mutual respect, understanding and non-interference in affairs of each other.

The spokesman said the bill should go through several committees in the House of Representatives and the Senate before its adoption.

Pakistan remains attached to constitutionalism, the rule of law, the protection of human rights and the freedom of expression, because it considers democracy as a vehicle of prosperity and progress as a nation.

The introduction of the bill highlights the continuous commitment of PTI supporters in the United States, which has been pressure on American legislators since the withdrawal of Imrans of automatic in 2022. In the past three years, activists affiliated to the PTI organized demonstrations, have held meetings with members of the Congress and exhorted American intervention in Pakistan's political affairs.

In June 2024, a similar resolution was adopted in the House of Representatives with crushing Bipartisan support, with 98% of the votes in favor. While the Pakistani diplomats have recognized the concerns about development, they kept the hope that the bill would not gain enough traction to be implemented. They stressed that Washington still considered Pakistan as an important security partner, citing Islamabads' cooperation in the recent arrest and the deportation of an Islamic Khorasan Islamic terrorist as an example.

Last month, the member of the Wilson Congress and the member of the Republican Congress August Pfluger sent a letter to the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, exhorting him to intervene to restore democracy in Pakistan.
