The head of the TUV, Jim Allister, accused the former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar of “partitioning” the United Kingdom during the Brexit negotiations by insisting that “on the border is pushed where Ira could never push it”.

Mr. Allister warned against “a nice and vague feeling” between the United Kingdom and Ireland, claiming that relations between the two countries included “the maliciousness of the detriment of Northern Ireland”.

As the leader of the Fine Gael Party, Mr. Varadkar held the Taoiseach post from 2017 to 2020, returning to the role in 2022 before resigning in 2024.

He played a key role in Brexit negotiations, with a famous meeting with the Minister of the time, Boris Johnson, in a manor on the Wirral in England, considered an important moment to open an means for the agreement on the exit of the United Kingdom of the EU.

The agreement avoided the prospect of a hard commercial border introduced on the island of Ireland, but it caused years of additional political disorders, in particular within unionism in Northern Ireland, on the creation of a so-called border of the Irish Sea on the movement of goods between the region and Great Britain.

During a debate in the municipalities on the inheritance of Saint-Patrick, the deputy of North Antrim referred to the Second World War where he declared that the Irish government “officially and fairly expressed his regrets to the death of Hitler”.

He continued by saying that “when cooperation was sought” by the British government during the problems, “there was very little action” of the Irish government.

The move of the post-Brexit commercial situation of Northern Ireland, Mr. Allister, said that it would be impossible to “ignore the incredible constitutional situation”. The region is following the Windsor framework agreement.

He said, “It is said that it is a United Kingdom. It is a United Kingdom, unfortunately partitioned by a border in the Sea of ​​Ireland and the point to which I am approaching is the following, which is at the request of the authorities in the Irish Republic.

“It was the Taoiseach of the Irish Republic that pushed and cajolized and forced the EU to their irrational requests.

“The EU, at the start of the protocol negotiations, was prepared, they indeed created the idea of ​​the mutual application to control the movement of goods.

“But unfortunately, it was Taoiseach Varadkar that insisted, which saw the opportunity to partition the United Kingdom, which insisted that the border was pushed where I will have never been able to push it during their 30 years of terror, insisted that it was pushed to the Irish Sea.

“It was the government of Dublin that made these irrational and repudiated requests the thing that made this useless and mutual application.

“So yes, a lot of nice and blurred feelings about how the Irish Republic and the United Kingdom have relations, and in many areas, they are good, but there is also a malice at the expense of Northern Ireland.”

Speaker, SNP MP for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East Seamus Logan said: “I do not remember some of the accusations he makes on the role of the Irish government in terms of negotiations that followed the Brexit vote.

“But what I wanted to ask him to clarify for the purposes of the file is not the case that many trade unionists have elected representatives, some of whom in this room, encouraged their voters and their supporters to vote for Brexit in June 2016, right?”

Mr. Allister agreed that they did but added: “They did not get Brexit”.

He concluded: “I think that in any relationship, you are looking for a double -meaning cooperation, and you are certainly not trying to try to exploit a situation to achieve the concealment of a part of your neighboring country, and this is unfortunately what happened with regard to negotiations on Brexit.”
