Donald Trump reveals the next steps after the first call with Mark Carney

President Donald Trump published his reaction on Truth Social after his Friday morning call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Trump posted: “I have just finished talking with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Canada. It was an extremely productive call, we agree on a lot, and we will come together immediately after the next Canada elections to work on elements of politics, business and all other factors, which will end up being formidable for the United States of America and Canada. Thank you for your attention!”

Friday’s call marked Trump's first with Carney since he was elected the head of the Canada Liberal Party on March 9. Carney faces the leader of the Conservative Party Pierre Hairy during a snap election on April 28.

The Prime Minister’s office said after Friday’s appeal that Carney told Trump that there would be reprisal prices on April 2 against the United States, the statement said he agreed to start negotiations on a new economic and security relationship after the elections if Carney won.

Trump has long risked a major diplomatic crisis with his threats to impose import rates against Canada, as well as with his repeated suggestions that the country could become the 51st American state.

The call occurs one day after Carney said that the relationship that the country had previously appreciated with the United States is now “on” in the middle of current tensions and reactions to the reaction of Trump's tariff plans.

Trump announced this week that he would impose a 25% rate on cars not made in the United States, from April 3.

Trump has already put prices on Canada, Mexico and China, including a 25% rate on Canadian imports and a 10% tariff on Canadian energy imports.

The president also published on social media on Thursday if the European Union is working with Canada to cause “economic damage” in the United States, then the prices “much larger than expected” would be placed on both in retaliation.

During the weeks, months and years to come, we must fundamentally reinvent our economy. We must make sure that Canada can succeed in a radically different world.
