Trump says he is not kidding on the search for a third term in contempt for the Constitution

Follow the latest news on the Trump administration.
President Trump did not exclude seeking a third term in office on Sunday, telling NBC News that he was not joking about the possibility and suggested that there were methods to bypass the limit of two terms presented in the Constitution.
In large -scale remarks to meet the press, Trump said that many people wanted him to serve a third term, described himself as upset by President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and promised to impose prices on the world rivals, according to a maintenance transcript by the network.
Many people want me to do it, he told the host of programs, Kristen Welker, on the possibility of a third term. But we think we have a long way to go. I am focused on the current.
Any attempt to seek a third term would take place on the 22nd amendment, which begins, no one will be elected to the president's office more than twice.
On Sunday, after the release of the interview, the White House reiterated that Mr. Trumps stressed that he focused on his current mandate and added that it was far too early to think about the idea.
The Americans approve and massively support President Trump and his policies in America, Steven Cheung, director of white house communications, said in a statement. He added that Trump was focused on defeat all injuries made by Biden administration and making America again large.
Trump has often thought about the idea of a third term, especially in rallies and speeches that have delighted his supporters, although he has often treated him more like a humorous apart. The interview was the first time that Mr. Trump indicates that he was seriously considering the idea, that his allies have continued to amplify. He has already compared to a king, showed an affinity for autocratic leaders and posted governance tactics, experts and constitutional historians compared to authoritarianism.
Three days after Mr. Trump was sworn in for the second time, representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would make Trump eligible for a third term. Such a measure would be extraordinarily difficult: constitutional modifications require approval by a vote of two thirds of the congress, then the ratification of three -quarters of the states.
In the interview, Ms. Welker noted that she had heard her joke about a third term on several occasions. Trump clearly said he considered that it was a real possibility.
No, no, I'm not kidding, he said. I'm not kidding.
Ms. Welker asked Mr. Trump if he had received plans, and he said he hadn't done it but added that there were methods that you could do.
Ms. Welker suggested a possibility: having the vice-president JD Vance at the top of the ticket in 2028, to pass the office to Mr. Trump after winning. Trump recognized that it could happen.
But there are others too, he said. There are others.
Trump refused to say what it could be.
Derek T. Muller, professor of law at the University of Notre Dame and scholar in elections, said that there had been a dissident opinion at the disposition of the 22nd amendment which focuses on being elected president without approaching the idea of climbing to the office. However, he said, such a route would be complicated by the 12th amendment.
Mr. Muller stressed that the 12th amendment stipulates that no constitutionally ineligible person in the president's office will be eligible for that of the vice-president of the United States.
Mr. Muller said that he really doubted a way to a third term for Mr. Trump.
You must have so many parts in place to make it even viable, in addition to this complicated legal theory, he said.
In his remarks to Ms. Welker, the president has also accumulated his strongest criticism to date against Mr. Putin, threatening to impose secondary prices for Russia's oil if the country had thwarted negotiations on a cease-fire agreement with Ukraine which would prevent fighting.
The comments reported an increasing impatience with the negotiations. Trump said 25 to 50% prices on Russian oil could be taxed at any time and that he was planning to speak with his Russian counterpart this week.
If Russia and I cannot conclude an agreement on the end of bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia what is not the case, but if I think it was Russia's fault, I will put secondary oil prices, throughout Russia oil, Trump said.
Trump previously called secondary prices as with imports from imports from countries that buy products from a targeted nation in his foreign policy. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
The comments were remarkable given the measures Mr. Trump has taken to align with Mr. Putin, despite the support of the United States to Ukraine since the large-scale invasion of Russia more than three years ago. Since his entry into office, Mr. Trump has refused to recognize that it was Russia that sparked the war, said President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, a dictator, but not Mr. Putin, and accused Mr. Zelensky of not wanting peace.
Mr. Trumps' remarks also underlined his growing promise to use prices to force countries to comply with his national and foreign policy objectives. In the same telephone call, he said he would consider the secondary prices on Iran if he had not concluded an agreement with the United States to ensure that it has not developed a nuclear weapon, said Welker.
Trump told Ms. Welker that he was very angry, annoyed Mr. Putin for questioning Mr. Zelensky's credibility and for having discussed the prospect of a new direction in this country. Trump suggested that such comments could collect negotiations and that they did not go to the right place.
A new leadership means that you will not have agreed for a long time, right? Trump said.
Russia and Ukraine have accepted a limited truce, but that failed the full break of the fight that Trump administration officials asked, with the support of the Ukraines. The limited ceasefire remains tenuous because Russia seeks more concessions and that Ukraine has expressed a doubt that a truce would be confirmed.
On negotiations on Irans' nuclear capacities, Trump said that officials of the two countries spoke, according to the account of the NBCS of Ms. Welkers to the call with the president, although he has raised the prospect of military action if economic and other measures do not succeed.
If they do not conclude, Mr. Trump said about Iran, there will be bombings. It will be bombing what they have never seen before.
Earlier this month, Trump sent a letter to the supreme chief of Irans, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urging direct negotiations with the government to Tehran to limit the nuclear program advanced by the country. The letter indicates that Mr. Trump preferred diplomacy to military action.
Trumps increasing secondary prices on oil from Russia and Iran was the last example of the presidents interested in using the prospect of economic pressure on third -party nations.
Last week, he published a decree on Monday to repress countries that buy Venezuelan oil by imposing prices on goods sending to the United States, saying that Venezuela deliberately and deceived criminals and murderers to America.
Trump called on the new samples he threatened on buyers of secondary Venezuelan oil prices, a label that has echoed the secondary sanctions of the sanctions imposed on other countries or parties that are negotiated with nations under sanctions.
Some trade and sanctions experts have said that the existing secondary sanctions associated with countries like Russia and Iran were not already well applied and wondered if the United States would have the capacity to carry out new tariff penalties.
