According to the Anadolu agency, managed by the State, the criminal court of Istanbul of the first instance ruled against the appeals filed by the legal team of Imamoglus, deciding that its detention would continue to wait for the end of the trial.
Imamoglu, a high -level opposition figure and widely considered as a leading challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdogans for a long time, was detained on March 19 and officially imprisoned four days later. Its arrest and withdrawal of functions have triggered the largest wave of antigolander demonstrations in Türkiye in recent years.
The government defended judicial actions, insisting that the courts operate independently and free from political influence. However, criticisms argued that the detention of Imamoglus is a decision calculated to eliminate a powerful rival before the turkeys at the next presidential election, currently scheduled for 2028 but which may take place earlier.
The mayor's lawyers argued that the investigation had been carried out in violation of legal standards, according to the report, adding that they would probably renew the appeal efforts.
The court also rejected calls for Murat Ongun, president of a media company linked to the municipality of Istanbul and a close assistant from Imamoglu, as well as other suspects arrested for similar accusations, the agency reported.
According to the report, Imamoglu achieved national importance after beating the Erdogan power party during the election of the 2019 Istanbul town hall.
