The CPSC commissioner told President Trump, “see you soon in court”

Rich Trumka Jr., commissioner of the Consumer Products Safety Commission until he was dismissed by President Trump on Thursday, said in a letter that his dismissal was illegal and that he was planning to combat action.

The CPSC is an independent agency that regulates the safety of consumer products, from toys to household appliances. It is the group that often manages the reminders of items such as the kitchen ranges that can define fires and steam cleaners that have burned users.

In his statement, Trumka said he had no reason to fire, but that his dismissal came after he and two other commissioners voted against the members of the Elon Musk government department, or DOGE, to work at the agency. Trumka, who was appointed at 7 years by President Biden in 2021, said that he had pushed Doge again because “if these people are authorized to govern our agency, they go and the result would return the chronometer to product safety”.

He added: “The work of life of CPSC is far too important to take this bed.”

In addition to Trumka, two other commissioners of the Consumer Product Safety Commission for five people were dismissed Thursday, the Washington Post. All three were democrats, said the publication.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comments, however, at a press conference on Friday, the spokesperson for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, said that the CPSC was under the executive branch, giving the president the right to dismiss employees.

Consumer Reports published a statement sentenced CPSC's layoffs and said the commissioners should be reinstated immediately.

“This is a terrible attack and without law against the independence of the childcare security dog ​​in our country,” said William Wallace, director of advocacy for safety reports, in an email. “Anyone who cares about keeping his family safe should oppose this decision and demand that they be reversed.”

Senator Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota Democrat, and three other Democratic Senators – Maria Cantwell from Washington; Ed Markey of Massachusetts; And Richard Blumenthal du Connecticut – also opposed layoffs in a letter of May 9 to Mr. Trump, qualifying the dismissals of “illegal”.

DOGE sought to reduce federal workers in the name of reducing fraud, waste and abuse. CPSC's layoffs occur after the Trump administration rejected other officials from independent agencies, including the Vice-President of the National Transportation Safety Board this week and member of the National Labor Relations Board in January.
