Senator Elissa Slotkin is a democrat, but she comes to her criticism of the Trump administration from a somewhat different angle from the colleagues who are just as critical of the party, like Chris Murphy, Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders. It represents Michigan, a swing state whose voters considered good, in 2024, to send a democrat to the Senate and Donald Trump to the White House. She maintains that her voters have answered their common accent on economic issues, but it is deeply skeptical that prevailing on the promise to return jobs to Michigan will be fruit. His voters will see this, she maintains, if the Democrats adopt alpha energy and force the president to own his policies.

Slotkin was a fierce critic of Trump, exploding him as well as his team for ignorance in their treatment of Ukrainian leaders, telling Vanity Fair that the president contracts for dictators and kicking in his teeth. Earlier this year, in the democratic response to Trumps Trumps of a hundred minutes to a joint congress session, Slotkin urged his listeners not to abandon: do not get me wrong. It's easy to be exhausted, but America needs you more than ever. If the previous generations had not fought for this democracy, where would we be today?

The Swahili and Arabic, Slotkin worked for the CIA, in Iraq and, later for the State Department and the Ministry of Defense, before being elected to the House of Representatives of the United States, in 2018. It comes from a prosperous family that made its money in the meat sector; Before selling in Tyson Foods, the company made Franks Ball Park. In our conversation for the New Yorker Radio Hour, Slotkin urged democratic leadership to concentrate their criticisms of the administration on daily economic issues: if you are not talking to the peoples who find it difficult to pay their bills, she said, then you just have half a conversation. Our discussion has been modified for duration and clarity.

The senator, you won the siege of the Michigan Senate in a state that voted for Donald Trump. What do you think these voters have seen in you and the person for whom they voted for the president?

I talked about it essentially two things. N ° 1, I focused quite religiously on economic issues. The vast majority of my television advertisements, my sender and my digital things concerned wallet problems in one way or another. And I think people question Democrats in general, and what their priorities were and if their priority was to reduce costs.

And then the second thing is a little more ephemeral, and it's just a kind of alpha energy. I think people are looking for leadership, to cross the tunnel dark in the light, for a very complicated period of the history of our country. And so they want a little Alpha and it's not a male-feminine thing, it's just a leadership thing. I obviously have major disagreements with the way Trump leads, but I don't think most people would deny that he has alpha energy.

For me, in order to win and represent my condition, I was able to enter very conservative, very red areas, very republican areas. All my strategy is: to lose better in red areas. Enter and meet enough people, and surprise yourself enough, so that you take off some of these voters and lose better with forty-one vote instead of thirty-five percent of votes in a certain county or in an area. These are not your policy documents on your website, these are not bancal things. It's just, as, do they get the leadership atmosphere of you? And I may have a few more ounces than the average democrat, and that helped me in some of these areas where the Democrats have lost quite large.

To be clear, say that if you get away from problems like high prices, if you start talking about democracy, if you start talking about oligarchy, or even corruption, when it comes to Donald Trump, that in a place like Michigan, are you going to fail?

Well, we can walk and chew gum, right? There is no way that I never say, given what Donald Trump does to cancel our democracy, that we should not look at these problems and activate these questions. We should. As a person who was in national service all my life, which was trying to do here is to preserve our democracy.

But I think that if you only do that, and don't talk to people who really find it difficult to pay their bills, you just have half a confusion. In Michigan, in general, if you do not talk about the economy, you have literally half a conversation. And I asked someone to tell me, I cannot pay so that my child goes to the summer camp with democracy. So it's not that people don't do it. But if you work two jobs and have shitty health insurance, it's just not the thing that keeps you awake at night. And I did this very clear that Democrats can do more than one thing. But in my part of the world, you have to start portfolios from people and their children.

Do you think Kamala Harris failed to solve economic problems?

Well, look, I mean she had, what, a hundred days? Something very, very short. I think what ended up happening was that people could not say what our priorities were at the highest level. There were so many priorities that there were no priorities. And once again, I have no love for Donald Trump, but he really made an election on your wallet, and each pencil panel, everything he did, was just focused on this. And so people have said, well, look, I don't really like everything he has to say, but I want more money in my pocket. I will vote for the person who will put more money in my pocket

More than anything, more than immigration, even?

Without fail. I mean, yes, of course, immigration is a problem that polarizes many people, active a lot of people. But even if you look at the backcrump and [J. D.] Vance also spoke of immigration as an economic problem. Vance made a false assertion that illegal immigration was the reason why the accommodation was so expensive. You could not get a house that you could afford because of immigration. It's a false story, but they transformed immigration into an economic problem because it was the main foot, certainly at the end.

President Trump has been in office this second time for a hundred days, and the most important economic proposal has been prices. He landed the stock market. He has alienated business partners worldwide. How have your voters see what has happened economically since then?

I would say that the context is important. In the middle of the country, certainly in Michigan, we have lost many manufacturing jobs in our state in the past thirty years. If you ask the average person, the combination of Alena, or what is now called USMCA, and China has sucking jobs. It's just the general feeling on the ground. So, I heard people this weekend: Trump has a big plan. He would not put us in this pain, this short -term pain, if it was not for a big gain later.
