Sweden requests the release of the journalist held in Türkiye on Erdogan insults
SuedeForeign Minister Maria Malmer Sternergard met her Turkish counterpart on Thursday, Hakan Fidan, in Warsaw to put pressure on the release of Swedish journalist Joakim Medin, who was sentenced to Turkey for insulted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The meeting took place during an informal meeting of the EU foreign ministers, according to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Medin, journalist of the Swedish newspaper Today, etc.was arrested on March 27 at Istanbul airport when he was in assignment covering mass demonstrations in Türkiye. He was sentenced to 11 -month suspended sentence by a Turkish court for allegedly insulted Erdogan. The accusations arose from his presence reported during a Stockholm demonstration in January 2023, where an effigy of Erdogan was displayed. However, Medin argues that he was not in Sweden during the demonstration.
Despite the ordinance of the court for the liberation of Medin, he remains imprisoned while waiting for a trial for a distinct accusation of being a member of the Workers' Party of Kurdistan (PKK), a group considered as a terrorist organization by Turkey and its Western allies. Medin denies the accusation.
The Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stenergard, underlined his request for the immediate return of Medin to Sweden during his discussion with Fidan.
