Trump “ frustrated '' by the inability to end the Russian war against Ukraine, reports WSJ

American president Donald Trump expresses his frustration in private to the donors of his inability to negotiate the end of the Russian war against Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal reported on May 9.

Trump initially said during the 2024 presidential campaign that he would end the war during his first day in power. He then continued by saying that he would end his first 100 days in power, adding on several occasions that war “would never have taken place” if he had had a second consecutive mandate to power.

However, Trump has since recognized in private that Russia is difficult to negotiate because they “want it”, referring to Ukraine, reported the WSJ, quoting familiar sources with comments.

US vice-president JD Vance also publicly declared that Russia “asks too much” to end his war against Ukraine.

This change of rhetoric comes after Trump had a certain number of public failures from the public with President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him “a dictator without election” and claiming that Ukraine was “more difficult” to deal with than Russia.

Trump has asked the advisers in recent weeks if they thought Russian President Vladimir Putin had “changed” since his last mandate and has expressed concern about Moscow's military actions, including strikes in children with children, WSJ reported.

Trump called for an “unconditional” ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on May 8, adding that “if the cease-fire is not respected, the United States and its partners will impose other sanctions (against Russia)”.
