It’s not surprising to read about the horrible conditions at Dublin’s Santa Rita prison, as described in “A questionable rubber stamp for a dangerous prison” (Open Forum, February 25). The American Correctional Association, which has granted accreditation to many detention centers in conditions of overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, should be the subject of a federal investigation.
This non-profit organization has employees from private prisons on its accreditation and standards committees, and its conferences are sponsored by private prison companies seeking accreditation for their facilities. So how can the American Correctional Association grant independent and legitimate assessments of our prisons when it operates in these compromised and illegitimate circumstances?

No new phenomenon
Regarding "S.F. bike lanes occupied by rich, white men "(Bay Area, February 26): Although I am a white man, I am a poorer and more progressive. I am upset by Phil Matier who gives the impression that traveling cycling are a new phenomenon populated by new residents who are young and wealthy. All of San Francisco is now filled with wealthy white men, which has disrupted congestion with Ubers and Lyfts and increased the housing shortage. 51-year-old man who has never made nearly $ 250,000 or $ 100,000 and who has been cycling for 27 years. In a tight city, it always made sense to me.
I have also been a bicycle safety activist to fight for our rights on the roads. Cars can kill in an instant. The bicycle coalition and the city have been trying to make this city a better city for public transit for decades. To point out that Latinos love their cars to make it appear that the lanes are reserved for a richer subset is to undermine environmental justice. Americans in general love their cars, and this love story has brought us to these times of climate change. It's time to love something else.
James Farinacci, San Francisco
Regarding "Russia poses a terrible existential threat to the United States" (Letters, February 25): I absolutely oppose the efforts of so many politicians and opinion-makers of our nation to shift all responsibility for global problems on the shoulders of Russia and Vladimir Putin. The rivalry between our two countries has a long and bitter history and has occurred within minutes of starting a nuclear war between us more times than we think.
I can only imagine that our stubborn refusal to replace this unnecessary and deadly competition between our two nations with a sensible and friendly working alliance comes from our chronic feelings of anger and hopelessness. Many of the 7 billion people around the world are severely depressed and find their lives not even worth living. And we do not have the courage to question their destructive attitudes and to actively defend the cause of world peace and the abolition of the world's ugly and terrifying nuclear weapons. Are we going to continue walking towards our eventual self-destruction? Or are there enough human beings who care and love enough to create a world of true peace and human solidarity?

Worth the vote
Regarding "Klobuchar is the unifying choice" (Editorial, February 23): Although still undecided, I too find much to admire in the candidacy of Senator Amy Klobuchar. The approval of the Chronicle was well motivated, but I think that one point deserves to be mentioned: Klobuchar has repeatedly shown a genuine sense of humor which could be essential in the face of President Trump's inevitable barrage of personal lies and attacks.
This was made quite evident during the debate in which, unlike Senator Elizabeth Warren's petty barbels, Pete Buttigieg's spiritual sarcasm, Mike Bloomberg's false self-deprecation or total lack of pleasure of Senator Bernie Sanders, Klobuchar has in fact shown a real ability to find a lighter side, even for the darkest questions. Her sense of stupidity seems to keep her sane, and it is a valuable asset to any public servant and perhaps a merit for my vote.
Stephen Upjohn, San Francisco
I just read "Russia again in the elections" (editorial, February 24), and I want to congratulate you on a very impressive piece. You are talking not only about the evidence of Russian involvement, but also about the gain for Vladimir Putin, which has been substantial.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
