Sir Keir Starmer says artificial intelligence (AI) will improve public services, put money in your pocket, create jobs and improve your children's futures.
Politicians bet on it – but how much do they actually spend? And on what?
Sky News asked consultancy Tussell, which analyzes government contracts and spending, to help find out.
More than $3.35 billion represents overall spending by ministries on AI contracts, infrastructure and services, since the technology first appeared around 2018.
The number of contracts increases every year.
By far the largest is a 2021 contract between the Met Office and Microsoft to build the world's most powerful weather and climate forecasting supercomputer, as well as a few smaller contracts allowing departments to use its Copilot AI.
It's worth more than a billion in total.
Another major contract is that of Init – the German public transport technology company – with Transport for London, worth €259 million.
But this may come as a surprise: one of the smallest recipients is Alphabet.
The company behind Google, and a massive investor in AI, has just two contracts with the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Justice, worth 2.5 million.
The American company Palantir has many lower value contracts – 25 in total, worth 376 million euros.
Its British boss, Louis Mosley, told Sky News that Palantir was helping junior doctors write exit summaries. And in defense, it helps intelligence officers gather information and process it more quickly.
