Trump threatens food aid as US government shutdown continues | Donald Trump News

The US government shutdown entered its 35th day on Tuesday, equating to the longest period in the country's history.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he will only provide nutrition assistance to low-income Americans once the government shutdown ends, appearing to defy two court orders requiring him to release contingency funds to keep the food aid program operational.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which serves one in eight Americans each month, was scheduled to be frozen on November 1, after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said on October 10 that it would not be able to fund the program if the shutdown continued.

The US government shutdown entered its 35th day on Tuesday, equating to the longest period in the country's history.

Last week, federal judges in the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island issued separate but similar rulings ordering the federal government to cover benefits by drawing on contingency funds. As a result of those decisions, the Trump administration announced Monday that it would partially fund the nation's flagship food aid program, drawing on about $5 billion set aside in emergency reserves.

However, the president appeared to backtrack on his administration's plans with an article on Truth Social on Tuesday, saying he would only fund SNAP once the government reopens.

SNAP BENEFITS, which increased by billions and billions of dollars (MANY TIMES!) during Joe Biden's disastrous tenure (due to the fact that they were handed out randomly to anyone on demand, as opposed to those who needed them, which is the point of SNAP!), will only be provided when the radical left Democrats open up the government, which they can easily do, and not before! ยป posted the president Tuesday morning.

SNAP, known colloquially as food stamps, costs more than $8 billion to deploy each month. An individual in the program receives an average of about $190 per month, while a household receives an average monthly benefit of $356 in groceries. Benefits are usually loaded onto debit cards.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared to contradict the president's social media post Tuesday afternoon, saying the administration was in full compliance with the court order but that releasing the funds would not be a quick process.

Recipients of these SNAP benefits should understand [that] it will take some time to receive that money, Leavitt said. The president doesn't want to have to continue to dip into a reserve fund that, by the way, doesn't even have enough money to finance the entire program.

The USDA said Monday that in light of the ruling by U.S. District Judge John McConnell of Rhode Island, one of the judges who initially ordered the administration to fund SNAP, it would use the emergency funding to pay SNAP recipients 50 percent of their usual benefit, calling it a burdensome process that would result in delayed benefits.

Lawyers with the liberal legal group Democracy Forward, in a motion Tuesday, told McConnell that the USDA's statement about the delays demonstrated that the administration had failed to resolve the burdens caused by granting only partial benefits.

Time is of the essence when it comes to hunger, the lawyers write.

Leavitt repeatedly called the shutdown a Democratic-led initiative during his Tuesday news conference, saying the party was willing to harm the country to score political points.

Democrats are intentionally harming American families, businesses and workers with this shutdown in order to fight for free health care for illegal aliens to appease their radical left base, she said.

More than 42 million Americans rely on food assistance. Until the court ordered it, the Trump administration had said it would not use emergency funds to support the program.

The US government shutdown began on October 1 when Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on a funding bill. Since then, the two parties have failed to agree on an interim funding measure 14 times.

On Tuesday, the Senate voted 54-44 against a continuing resolution, passed by the House of Representatives, that would have funded the government until November 21.

Democrats are in the minority in both houses of Congress and are trying to use the spending bill to force Republicans to negotiate crucial health care spending.

Democrats want Congress to extend subsidies that expire before the U.S. health care sign-up period begins in November and reverse cuts to Medicaid aid for low-income people and people with disabilities.
