Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday evening to discuss the war in Iran and other issues with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping.
Anna Kelly, White House principal deputy press secretary, said an opening ceremony and meeting would be held Thursday morning and the trip would conclude Friday. The United States plans to host the Chinese leader on a reciprocal visit later this year.

Kelly said this week’s trip would have “tremendous symbolic importance” and focus on “rebalancing relations with China and prioritizing reciprocity and fairness to restore American economic independence.”
Trump’s visit, originally planned for earlier this year but postponed until March due to the US-Israeli war on Iran, comes as the US president struggles to contain the fallout from the war, both at home and abroad.
A senior administration official told media during an anonymous briefing on Sunday that Trump could “pressure” China on Iran in areas such as oil sales and Tehran’s purchase of potential dual-role military and civilian goods.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week accused China of “funding” Iran.
“Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism, and China buys 90% of its energy, so they are funding the largest state sponsor of terrorism,” Bessent told Fox News.
Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to U.S.-Israeli attacks, restricting passage on a key artery of global energy transportation.
China has said it wants to see the war end and last week hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arraghchi. At the same time, Beijing has refused to recognize Washington’s “unilateral” sanctions against Iran’s oil sector.
The disruption resulting from the war disrupted the global economy, with Asian states that rely on imports from the Middle East particularly hard hit.
Trump could also bring up China’s support for Russia during negotiations, as well as trade and rare earth minerals, a vital resource for the US technology sector. Executives from aircraft manufacturer Boeing and a handful of agricultural companies are expected to accompany the American delegation.
The unnamed administration official said no change was expected in the U.S. position on Taiwan, the main sticking point in relations between Washington and Beijing. China considers the self-ruled island part of its territory, but the United States has deep security and economic commitments to Taiwan.
