Asia Minute: Beijing has hosted high-level delegations all month
It’s been nearly two weeks since President Trump returned from his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Currently, there are no immediate diplomatic visits on the official White House schedule, but Beijing is a different story.
It was a busy month with high-level visitors to Beijing.
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin came for two days to sign trade and energy deals.
This week, the Pakistani Prime Minister met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Pakistan’s Information Ministry reported that business leaders signed more than $1 billion in trade deals as part of the visit, in areas ranging from energy to agriculture.
The Serbian president was also in Beijing this week. The South China Morning Post reports that the two leaders signed more than 20 agreements, mainly on trade and technology.
And it’s not just heads of state who visit China.
Earlier this month, Iran’s foreign minister met his Chinese counterpart in Beijing. Singapore’s foreign minister did the same this week, and Reuters reports that Britain’s foreign secretary is planning a visit to the Chinese capital next week.
Although these visits do not often produce major international news, they reflect a trend: regular diplomatic visitors to Beijing.
The last international leader to visit the White House was Britain’s King Charles in late April.
Meanwhile, President Xi has not left his own country this year – although he is scheduled to make at least one international trip in the fall: a visit to Washington in September.
