Hasto believes that the film is not just entertainment, but a symbolic work that “exposes” the practices of corruption and greed in Indonesia.

Speaking at a group viewing event organized by Kulturnesia in commemoration of Bung Karno Month in Megaria, Central Jakarta, Sunday (7/6/2026), Hasto highlighted the film’s main character.

This character is depicted as a miserly businessman who can still enjoy extraordinary luxury even though his body is behind bars.

What’s interesting is that the corrupt businessman in the film is named Prakasa Kitaguming, a man from Solo who has the prisoner registration number 21061961.

This number is identical to the date of birth of the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo or Jokowi, i.e. June 21, 1961.

“It’s very symbolic. So it’s an enlightening film,” Hasto said after the film screening.

A glimpse of luxury in prison

Hasto believes that Joko Anwar is very adept at inserting criticism through small but striking details.

He highlighted how Prakasa Kitaguming’s character is portrayed as being in control and living a luxurious life even though his status is that of a corruption convict.

“In this film, Joko Anwar very cleverly tells how there is a businessman who is so miserly that even when he is arrested in prison for a corruption case, this businessman named Prakarsa Kitaguming still enjoys extraordinary luxury,” he said.

Furthermore, Hasto warned that the horrors shown in the film Ghost in Cell could become a harsh reality in the real world if state governance is ignored.
For him, this film is a portrait of a dystopia born from the failure of the social and political system.

“Even if there seems to be horror, that is, if the country is not managed well, what is conveyed in the film with various social, political criticisms and also in the life of the nation and the state can happen,” emphasized the man from Yogyakarta.

Even though the story is full of harsh criticism, Hasto sees a glimmer of hope at the end of the story.

He highlighted the moment when prisoners from different groups finally united. This unexpected alliance was formed to put an end to Prakasa and the prison guard who were tyrannically torturing them.

For Hasto, this scene is a manifestation of the spirit of unity that is at the heart of the nation’s ideology.
