Erdogan calls climate crisis a global threat comparable to wars and pandemics
Speaking at the Zero Waste Forum gala dinner in Istanbul on Sunday, Erdogan said: “The climate issue is a serious problem that threatens all of humanity, just like war and global pandemics. »
He emphasized that a wide range of environmental and production challenges – including air pollution, contamination of food supplies, food insecurity, waste disposal problems and natural disasters – are interconnected and often intensify through what he described as a “butterfly effect.”
According to Erdogan, the consequences of these interconnected problems are becoming more visible every year, affecting critical sectors such as energy, transportation, health, agriculture and livestock.
The Turkish president argued that the situation should be recognized as a climate crisis rather than just climate change, saying it is essential to accurately define the scale of the challenge to develop effective and practical responses.
He also highlighted rapid advances in technology and artificial intelligence, warning that increasing production levels combined with unsustainable consumption patterns are putting increasing pressure on the natural environment.
“We live in an era where artificial intelligence and new technologies accelerate production, while unconscious consumption habits deplete nature,” he added.
Erdogan made the remarks while highlighting the progress and goals of Turkey’s Zero Waste initiative, which aims to promote sustainability and reduce environmental damage through better waste management and resource efficiency.
