A hard Irish border is not the solution
The Irish border has long been the dog that didn’t bark in British politics. Ten years ago, John Major and Tony Blair warned that if the public voted for Brexit, the inevitable consequence would be a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland. This would endanger the peace, they advised, because it would in direct violation of the Good Friday Agreement.
Their prophecy never came to fruition. Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal meant the border was actually drawn in the Irish Sea. Northern Ireland has remained aligned in some areas with the EU single market. But even though the current solution has caused trade problems and considerable damage to unionists, it has kept the peace of the Good Friday Agreement intact.
But ten years later, the border is once again the subject of discussion, this time in the context of concerns about immigration.
After the appalling attack on Stephen Ogilvie in Belfast earlier this week, allegedly carried out by a Sudanese asylum seeker who arrived in the UK from Ireland, some have argued that the border with the Republic should be closed in the name of national security.
But peace in Northern Ireland was too hard-won to be jeopardized by a single affair. The Troubles ended, in part, thanks to a promise, enshrined in the Good Friday Agreement, to keep the Northern Ireland border invisible, maintaining the freedoms established in 1922 by the Common Travel Area. Canceling that commitment in response to a crime, no matter how horrific, could jeopardize everything that has been won.
It’s also not practical. Nearly 300 roads cross the border, more than the number of roads that crossed the former Iron Curtain. Effective patrolling would require closing many of these roads and having officers at major crossings.
It is of course worrying that it is not clear how many asylum seekers are entering Britain via the Irish border. But the real problem is why they are able to pass through other safe countries and yet obtain asylum here.
Psychological, spiritual and physical walls have been broken down between Catholic and Protestant communities in the name of peace in Northern Ireland. Reconstructing them as a hard border would raise more questions than it answers.
