IHC grants permanent adjournment to Imran’s £190m appeal

The Islamabad High Court has granted a final adjournment to Imran Khan’s lawyer in the £190 million appeal. The bench warned that it would decide the case on the basis of the existing record if the arguments were not presented at the next hearing.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday allowed a further adjournment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s appeal against his conviction in the ₹190 million corruption case, while clarifying that no further delay would be considered.

A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif issued the written order in the criminal appeal filed by Imran against his conviction in the Al-Qadir Trust case, also known as the ₹190 million corruption reference. The conviction was handed down by an audit court in January 2025.

During the hearing, Imran’s lawyer Sardar Latif Khosa requested a two-week delay. The court granted the request after the lawyer unequivocally undertook not to seek a further adjournment for any reason and that he would present his arguments on the merits at the next hearing.

“The request for adjournment is granted. However, it is made clear that this will constitute the last opportunity,” the order states.

The court further ordered that if the defense fails to pursue its arguments in the next hearing, the court will not grant further time and will decide the appeal based on the available record after hearing the respondents’ side. The matter was adjourned until a date to be fixed by the registry.

Who appeared in court

Along with Khosa, senior advocates Salman Akram Raja and Fatehullah Barki appeared for Imran Khan. The National Accountability Bureau was represented by Special Prosecutor Javed Arshad and Senior Special Prosecutor Muhammad Rafay. Islamabad Advocate General Naveed Malik also appeared along with the state lawyers.

Background of the case

The £190 million case concerns the settlement of the Al-Qadir Trust. The NAB alleges that Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi received billions of rupees and land measuring hundreds of kanals from a real estate company in return for legalizing 50 billion rupees which had been identified and returned to Pakistan by the UK during the previous PTI government.

The amount had been deposited into the Supreme Court’s account as part of a settlement involving the real estate tycoon. On January 17, 2025, an accountability court in Islamabad sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and Bushra Bibi to seven years in the same case. Both subsequently challenged their convictions before the IHC.
