John Oliver Discusses Trump's False Coronavirus Claims – Deadline

After skipping the clip of former presidential candidate Tom Steyer dancing with rapper Juvenile on his song "Back That Azz Up", John Oliver dove deep into the coronavirus in the Sunday night episode of Last week tonight and how the world – especially Donald Trump – has responded to the virus which will likely spread more around the world than it has ever done.

With confirmed deaths, falling stock markets and misinformation spreading like wildfire, there is a lot to be said for coronavirus. First of all, Oliver pointed out that you can't get rid of the virus by gargling with bleach – what people are actually saying. Most importantly, you cannot catch it by eating Chinese food, which is an ignorant claim.

There is a 2% death rate and while this may seem like a small number, it is a lot and he compares it to the number of missing people in the HBO series Leftovers. "A 2% death rate would be about 20 times higher than the seasonal flu," said Oliver. He points out that while the good news is that 80% of people with the virus have mild symptoms, the bad news is that they are more likely to spread without realizing it. An expert from 40 to 70% of the world population would be infected within a year and he jokes that the only disease that two thirds of the population should contract is "Adam Driver fever".

He then goes on to explain how there have been varying degrees of success around the world in the way they have managed the coronavirus. China has been contained, but the death toll has reached 2,700 worldwide. Oliver donates props to Vietnam for publishing a PSA with a catchy song that encourages people to learn how to wash their hands properly. He also noted that the quarantine of the coronaviruses on the cruise ship Diamond Princess was a complete failure, as he called the vessel a "floating petri dish". He added, "You might as well have held them in a Chuck E. Cheese ball pit."

He finally arrived at the United States' response. "The White House messages have been everywhere," said Olive, noting that one of Trump's advisers said they contained it … or "close enough to it" "Tightness" when it comes to containing it. Just when you think they are sending mixed messages, Donald Trump instructs Mike Pence to lead a task force on the virus because he apparently has a "certain knack for it."

"Does he think?" Asked Oliver. "I felt like the only thing Pence had a certain talent for was to avoid women on a leash, to suck the people who represent the antithesis of all that he claims to believe and fail miserably to a haircut known as Judi Dench. . "

Things got even more confusing at a press conference when Trump just left when the secretary of health and social services, Alex Azar, who should lead the task force, tried to explain that it was not replaced.

Oliver points out that he downplays any bad news and tweeted that the coronavirus was under control. He is reluctant to admit that there will be more cases in the United States. During the press conference, Trump experts openly declared that the cases would increase while he said that they were decreasing.

"This is the problem of a president whose whole life has been a series of low-stakes lies," says Oliver. "A man who lied – among other things – about his net worth, his Apprentice the odds, the number of floors in Trump Tower, the size of his electoral college victory, participation in his rallies, if it rained at its inauguration and if he was invited to this very boring and low-priced show – that it wasn & amp; amp; # 39; t! It was a lie! "

Trump continued to pedal on false hopes when he said the warmer weather in April would kill the virus and said it was a "nice" thing to look forward to.

One frightened Oliver commented: "First of all, never call beautiful calendar dates." He added: "I don't know how he did it, but I'm pretty sure he sexually harassed the month of April."

"It's a bad time to have a president who can't speak clearly," said Oliver and called Fox News for amplifying Trump's false claims

Oliver broke down and said we should be a little scared – but not very scared. He urged us not to be complacent and not to be a "fucking idiot". We should sit somewhere in between these two. In the meantime, we need to follow three basic rules: don't be racist, don't mask, and check the CDC website for updates.

He then ended with a joyful reminder to the catchy Vietnamese PSA.
