Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will meet in Moscow this week amid growing tensions in Syria, the Turkish presidency announced on March 2.
Turkey confirmed on March 2 that it had launched a full military operation against Russian-backed Syrian forces following growing clashes in the last rebel stronghold of Idlib.
The latest escalation followed the murder of 34 Turkish soldiers last week in an alleged air strike in Syria.
"The president is scheduled to make a full-day visit to Russia on March 5," said the Turkish presidency in a statement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov confirmed talks on Syria on Moscow on March 2.
But the Kremlin has drawn Turkey's attention to a warning from the Russian Defense Ministry that Moscow cannot guarantee the safety of Turkish aircraft flying in Syria.
Turkey killed 19 Syrian soldiers in a drone strike on March 1 and shot down two government warplanes.
Turkey and Russia – which support opposing parties in the conflict – have so far avoided direct confrontation. The two countries share important defense and trade ties.
On March 2, Putin told the Russian news agency TASS that Russia did not intend to wage war on anyone, but wanted to dissuade other countries to engage in a conflict with Moscow.
Erdogan and Putin agreed at a meeting in Sochi, Russia, in the Black Sea resort town, in October 2019 to carry out joint military patrols in north-eastern Syria.
But Syria and Russia seem increasingly determined to regain full control of the region, and an offensive launched in December displaced nearly a million civilians.
