China is ready to work with Russia to thoroughly prepare for future high-level interactions and plan for further cooperation in a number of areas, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Moscow. .

Wang made the remarks during a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Friday before leaving for Kazakhstan. China and Russia then released a joint statement by the two foreign ministers outlining the two countries’ common position on global challenges.

This was the last meeting Wang had with Russian officials during the three-day visit. On Thursday, he participated in a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Moscow. On the same day, he met his counterparts: Abdulaziz Kamilov from Uzbekistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi from Pakistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin from Tajikistan and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar from India.

Wang and Lavrov had in-depth discussions on international and regional issues of mutual concern and met with the media together after the talks.

Wang said China and Russia strongly support each other in the international arena, defending the legitimate interests of both countries and responding effectively to attacks and defamation by extremist forces in the United States.

Lavrov said Russia is willing to interact closely with China to advance important events on bilateral and multilateral programs and deepen cooperation in various fields to give new impetus to relations.

The United States has taken destructive action by following a Cold War-type “Indo-Pacific strategy” in the Asia-Pacific region, he said. The discord that the United States has created between countries in the region has caused divisions and even clashes, the senior Russian diplomat said.

Russia stands ready to strengthen strategic coordination with China and attaches importance to the central role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in regional cooperation in joint efforts to maintain peace and regional stability, Lavrov said.

Under the strategic leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the bilateral relationship has withstood testing of the COVID-19 pandemic and developments in the international situation this year, Wang said, adding that in two countries, economic and social activities have returned to normal, and governance capacity has reached a new level.

As this year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the founding of the United Nations, the two countries jointly preserved the outcome of the victory of World War II, maintained the central position of the United Nations, supported international equity and justice, and served as a stabilizer in unstable international situations, he said.

The two countries should continue their close coordination, better cooperate in the prevention and control of the epidemic, explore new avenues of cooperation amid the pandemic and facilitate the cross-border movement of people and goods, he said. .

Cyber security efforts

Cybersecurity is an important area of bilateral and international cooperation. Some countries are using their technological advantages to brazenly monitor other countries and steal their information, he said.

China recently proposed the Global Data Security Initiative in response to these common concerns about data security and with the aim of creating international rules on digital security with partners, Wang said.

The initiative, announced by Wang on September 4, aims to address new emerging challenges in data security and to contribute to global digital governance.

Lavrov said Russia has positive views on China’s proposed Global Data Security Initiative. It is conducive to the creation of international rules on data security and the strengthening of Russian-Chinese cooperation in international information security.

He noted that the backdrop for the initiative was the efforts of some countries to politicize information technology and cybersecurity, seeking to contain other countries under the pretext of safeguarding national security.
