Boris Johnson wants to put Scotlands NHS up for sale, SNP warns

The NHS SCOTLAND could go on sale if MPs back the controversial Tory Home Market bill tonight, the SNP has warned.

They described the legislation as a “Trojan horse” that could lead to the “kind of rampant privatization already seen” in the health service south of the border.

The SNP, along with the LibDems, Plaid Cymru, the SDLP, the Greens and the Alliance, tabled a destructive amendment to the legislation that would see it completely defeated.

Speaking ahead of today’s debate, SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford said: ‘This Tory takeover is a Trojan horse, which could open up the NHS and water services from Scotland to the kind of rampant privatization and deregulation we are already seeing under the Tories in England.

“The thrust of Boris Johnson’s bill is to restrict decentralized political choices and to impose Westminster decisions on Scotland. It includes a Trojan Horse clause to allow Conservative ministers to encroach even further on decentralization against the will of the Scottish Parliament in the future.

“This bill must be stopped in its tracks. The Conservative government has proven time and time again that it cannot be trusted. He freely admits he is prepared to break international law, impose an extreme Brexit and destroy the foundations of Scotland’s decentralization settlement.

“If Westminster does not stop this unprecedented attack on decentralization, it will demonstrate beyond a doubt that the only way to protect Scotland’s democratic powers, our NHS and our place in Europe is to become an independent country.

But the multi-party amendment to the Internal Market Bill, which has second reading today, is unlikely to pass. Boris Johnson has a majority of 80, and despite a growing rebellion from the backbench of his own party, there is little change from many of his whip-breaking MPs to kill the bill.

Responding to Blackford’s comments, a Scottish Conservative spokesperson said: ‘The Scottish NHS is decentralized. It is managed by the Scottish government. If he’s concerned about its privatization, Mr. Blackford should speak to the person responsible – Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The purpose of the legislation is apparently to allow free trade between the four UK countries after Britain leaves the EU.

At the heart of the legislation is a “mutual recognition” mechanism. This would see the regulation in one part of the UK recognized in all other countries.

There is a fear that could ultimately lead to lower food safety and environmental standards being imposed on Scotland.

The SNP and Labor say it is likely that as part of any post-Brexit trade deal the United States will expect the UK to take US products made from chlorinated chicken.

Yesterday, Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay was asked to rule out the sale of chemically cleaned poultry.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday Politics Scotland, the Conservative minister said the bill would “protect the UK’s domestic markets”.

“This is what this legislation offers, we will maintain high standards across the UK and allow Scottish businesses, which do three times more trade with the rest of the UK than with the EU, to maintain this activity, which is essential to protect jobs in Scotland. ”

Asked again to rule out the sale of chlorinated chicken, Barclay added, “I have been clear that we will maintain high standards. And that includes making sure that any chicken sold is fit for purpose and meets high standards. ”
