Canadians hate Donald Trump reaching new heights

WASHINGTON – Canadians really don’t like President Donald Trump. And their disgust for the US president is driving their opinion of the entire country to historically low levels.

In this, they are not alone, as a Pew Research survey released on Tuesday showed a dramatically low preference for the United States and Trump among residents of 13 countries in Europe, North America and Asia.

“In several countries, the share of the public with a favorable opinion of the United States is as low as it has ever been since the Center began to question this subject almost two decades ago,” reads. one in the Pew report.

Among Canadians, only 20% expressed confidence in Trump to “do the right thing about world affairs,” a new low for a president whose previous position was already a record nadir for U.S. presidents in the United States. over the 20-year history of the Pew Inquiry. George W. Bush reached an earlier level of confidence of 28% among Canadians during the Iraq War in 2007, while Barack Obama inspired the confidence of Canadians throughout his presidency, which 83% of Canadians did. confidence when he left office in 2017.

Their opinion of Trump seems to poison Canadians in the country that elected him. In the mid-2000s, when Bush was unpopular among Canadians, most continued to have a favorable impression of the country itself – in 2007, the depth of Bush’s personal preference in Canada, a majority of 55% of Canadians always had a favorable opinion of the United States, and that rating remained a majority opinion, often with over 60 percent of Canadians in favor, throughout the tenures of Bush and Obama. But less than half of Canadians had a favorable opinion of the United States as of 2017, when Trump took office, and hit a record low of 35% in the new report.

Even among Canadians who describe themselves as “right,” a majority still have an unfavorable view of the United States at this time, with just 44% generally in favor of the country, compared to 25% of those on the left, according to the investigation.

Canadian company Ekos Research recently found similar results while polling Canadian opinion on Trump and the United States. In an Ekos poll this summer, 79% of Canadians said they fear the United States is “on the brink of chaos.” This Ekos survey sampled 1,021 Canadians, giving an estimated margin of error of +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.

“It’s amazing,” Frank Graves, president of Ekos Research, recently said over the phone. “Canadians say their view of the United States is the most unfavorable ever.

Graves says Trump’s approval among Canadians he polled is “in the range of 15%,” and that “it’s unprecedented. At the height of the Iraq war, you know, there was a huge antipathy in Canada towards George W. Bush, but even then that pales in comparison to Donald Trump’s level of approval.

Graves says a whole host of issues drive opinions towards Trump and the country he leads, but the response to the coronavirus is the main one: 72% of Canadians believe the United States would have a better chance recover from the crisis with a change of government in the next November elections.

“When I ask, ‘When do you think we should think about opening the border?’ They say, “Well, maybe never,” says Graves.

This also matches Pew’s conclusions. In the Pew survey, 83% of Canadians say the United States has handled the coronavirus “very badly” or “quite badly” – relative to their opinion on Canada’s handling of the virus, which 88% of Canadians believe good.

The Pew survey was based on telephone interviews with “nationally representative” samples of 13,273 adults from June 10 to August 3 this year in Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Australia. , Japan and South Korea. The Pew report does not include an estimated margin of error.

According to Pew’s report, these feelings towards the United States are quite common around the world. Some countries have expressed even greater antipathy towards the United States – Germany has only 26 percent having a favorable opinion of the United States, France 31 percent and Australia 33 percent. Of the countries in the survey, only South Korea continued to have a majority favorable impression of the United States, at 59 percent.

Across the 13 countries, a median of just 15% says the United States has done a good job against the coronavirus, and only 16% trust Trump to do the right thing for the world. Belgium expressed the least confidence in Trump with 9%, Japan the most with still anemic 25% confidence in the US president.

Trump has even less confidence – among Canadians and those in other countries in Pew’s investigation – than the leaders of Russia and China. Among Canadians, 24% trusted Russian President Vladimir Putin, 22% trusted Chinese President Xi Jinping, and only 20% trusted Trump. The median of all countries in the survey ranks trust in these leaders similarly, with Putin at 23%, Xi at 19% and Trump at 16%.
