MOSINEE, Wisconsin (WSAW) – Many agencies, organizations and businesses in Marathon County are preparing for President Donald Trump to campaign in Mosinee on Thursday night.
It was originally scheduled to surrender on Friday, but plans for Monday night were changed to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wisconsin Central Airport. Doors open at 5 p.m. From Tuesday afternoon, it is his only campaign stop scheduled for Thursday.
The change itself prompted additional meetings and called on local agencies to make adjustments, several of which on Tuesday, however, Marathon County Deputy Chief Chad Billeb said Secret Service had effected the change in a way. fairly transparent and had had good communication about what they needed and their response. to local agencies.
This year’s visit is very similar to that of 2018, he said. We have a lot of preparation up front to make sure that we have the right assets in the right place to prepare for everyone who is going to come and see the president speak.
Billeb said there were too many agencies and resources to name that were working to accommodate this campaign stop, but that they include federal, state and local agencies, especially around the metro Wausau area. Even though the region’s Police and Fire / EMS departments are not directly on site, various agencies are ready to assist those departments by providing call services in their local jurisdiction, as well as within the framework of contingency plans for various emergency scenarios.
For example, Mosinee Fire and EMS had around 12-15 people working on site at the Trump 2018 rally, prepared for an emergency and also looking after attendees for heat-related issues. To help them with local calls, Deputy Chief Adam Grahn said they had SAFER ready to help, which he said they were planning to do this year. SAFER also had paramedics on the ground in 2018.
We make sure that all of our county agencies are represented and that the sheriff’s office is also staffed. We don’t impact these numbers when planning an event like this because our primary responsibility is to the citizens of the county and we have an adequate response from the Police, Fire and EMS to all. world while something like this is happening. on, Billeb insisted.
The sheriff’s office detailed his hours and costs for the 2018 visit. There were 37 employees assigned to this event, including those on bomb, SWAT, mobile dispatch, traffic, security, and incident control. This totaled 157 regular hours, 166 overtime, for a total cost of $ 10,161.68. Billeb said he expects much the same for the Thursday event and like 2018 some costs could be reimbursed by the campaign. This total cost is only for the sheriff’s office, with other departments driving costs as well, including officers from the Wausau and Everest Metro Police Department who have members on some of these special teams.
The Mosinee Police Department had four retail officers in 2018 with 13.25 regular hours and 23.75 overtime for a total of $ 1,451.59. Chief Ken Muelling said there will be four more officers this year and they expect the same
Each of them (the special teams) has some sort of advisory role and in some cases they’re actually made to be part of the actual event, but not all of them are actually on site, Billeb explained.
In 2018, the former St. Clares Hospital (now Marshfield Medical Center-Weston) was contracted as the closest facility to the event and had a visit with the Secret Service to prepare for any emergency. NewsChannel 7 has contacted the Marshfield Clinic, but has not received a response.
In terms of impacts on Wisconsin Central Airport, Director Brian Grefe said the event came at a good time for outbound and inbound flights, with no flights having to be moved or canceled due to the visit, although there is a potential for flight delays, as a result, on the day of the occurrence. Travelers will still be able to navigate the airport and people will still be allowed to pick up and drop off passengers, although Grefe said there would, of course, be more security.
He also advised travelers to prepare more time in their plans. Parking for airline passengers is designated in the West Lot, which is the first right turn on CWA Drive, although he said travelers should consider modes of transportation that will not require parking, such as a friend or family member, All-American Taxi, Northwoods Cab, Uber or Lyft.
Parking for the event will be in the main airport parking lot on a first come, first served basis, which is the first left turn on CWA Drive. Overflow parking will be available across the street at Crystal Finishing. Unlike 2018, parking will not be permitted on the lawn or elsewhere on the sidewalk on airport property. Grefe also encouraged people to be dropped off instead of having to park at the event. He also noted that having a ticket to the event does not guarantee access to the event.
We expect people to show up, be patient, and plan ahead. Understand that the public not coming to this event should avoid the Mosinee I-39, 153 area as it is going to be congested, Billeb said. He continued, people should plan to get to the event early and just be patient while waiting to get in and out of the event.
In 2018, there were around two protesters at the event site. Billeb said that, like in 2018, they will have a designated area if there are people who are planning to protest, but who are not participating in the event. He asks that those who attend the event or protest against the event be respectful to all parties and individuals.
