Mike Pompeo insists US ‘trusts’ Boris Johnson as PM threatens to violate international Brexit law

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today rallied behind Boris Johnson on his plan to potentially violate international Brexit law.

Donald Trump’s senior lieutenant said he trusted the prime minister and his administration to ‘get it right’ when asked about his proposals to bypass the Withdrawal Agreement with the project UK Home Market Act.

The move, which was due to face its next major hurdle on Tuesday, prompted Lord Keen, Scotland’s attorney general, to resign this afternoon amid reports he was unhappy with the legislation.

Ministers admitted last week that the prime minister’s proposals would violate international law, sparking an uprising from conservative backbenchers.

Meeting with Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab in Washington today, Pompeo was asked whether the United States still trusts Britain.

“Yes, we trust the UK. I am convinced that they will succeed ”, he declared during a press conference.

“We made it clear our point of view on the importance of the Good Friday Agreement, we know the complexity of the situation, we have done what we can to provide assistance where we can.

‘In the end it will be a set of decisions on this that the UK will take and I have no doubts that it will get there properly in a way that treats everyone fairly and gets a good result for what it is ‘was, the locals. The UK voted several years ago now ”.

The Prime Minister met with Conservative backbench rebels this afternoon in his office in the House of Commons.

The BBC said an agreement has now been reached between the government and the rebels for Parliament to have a say in any move by the Prime Minister to try to move away from what was agreed in the deal reached. with the EU last year.

However, the Telegraph said while progress had been made during the showdown, no formal compromise had yet been agreed, but both sides are optimistic that a deal can be reached.

The rebels, led by the chairman of the Special Justice Committee, Sir Bob Neill, want Parliament to have the ability to veto any move by Mr Johnson to quash the divorce deal – a so-called “ parliamentary lock ”.

It is not yet clear what the government may have offered the rebels, but Downing Street has confirmed that Mr Johnson has spoken to Sir Bob and that ‘conversations with MPs will continue’.

It came as Ursula von der Leyen warned that hopes of the EU and the UK agreeing on a trade deal are fading day by day as tensions remain high over plans to Mr Johnson’s Brexit.

The president of the European Commission fired back and said the deal reached last year “cannot be unilaterally changed, ignored or withdrawn”.

The EU has given Mr Johnson until the end of the month to withdraw his plans, with Brussels warning that failure to do so risks the total collapse of trade talks.

Lord Keen of Elie, Scotland’s Advocate General, has reportedly offered his resignation to the Prime Minister over the government’s Brexit plans

LordKeen of Elie reportedly offered to step down because he was deeply unhappy with Mr Johnson’s proposals to tear up parts of the Brexit divorce deal that ministers say violate international law.

The offer to resign from the peer, who was the UK government’s lawyer for Scotland, was made to the Prime Minister this morning.

He was not immediately accepted amid speculation that ministers were trying to persuade him to stay in his post.

But a Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement released this evening: ‘Lord Keen has resigned as advocate general for Scotland. The Prime Minister thanks him for his service.

Mr Raab told leaders of the US Congress that the EU’s “politicization” of the Northern Ireland issue in trade talks with the UK threatened the Good Friday deal.

Mr Raab, who is in Washington for talks with senior figures, said he had had “very positive discussions” with Republicans and Democrats.

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned Congress would never pass a free trade deal with the UK if legislation overturning Brexit divorce settlement were to ‘jeopardize’ the peace process.

However, Mr Raab – who will meet Ms Pelosi later on Wednesday – said he had made clear the UK’s ‘absolute’ commitment to the Good Friday deal.

‘This is a great opportunity to make it clear that the threat to the Good Friday deal, as reflected in the Northern Ireland protocol, stems from the politicization of the issue by the EU , and to be clear on how it happened and why it happened, he said following discussions with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“The UK’s action here is defensive of what the EU is doing, it’s preventative, we haven’t done any of that yet, and it’s proportionate.

“What we cannot is for the EU to seek to erect a regulatory border along the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.”
