I’m going to list a series of quotes – two or three on several topics – and I’d like you to try to figure out who said each one.
Hint: Each topic is the subject of a comment made last week by a senior government official appointed by President Donald Trump.
They are listed next to what Trump said at a town hall broadcast by ABC News Tuesday night. The event was remarkable as it is a very rare foray for the president outside his isolated Fox News area, and the things he said to disgruntled former supporters and people with pre-existing conditions were difficult to match reality. CNN’s Daniel Dale did a full fact-check and called the president’s comments a “lie fire hose.”
Spoiler alert: The point is, Trump is offering an extremely rosy take on reality, is completely enveloped in a bubble, or is lying about what he knows.
Note: I preceded each quote with a short paraphrase. The words actually spoken are in quotation marks.
1. When will a Covid vaccine be ready?
The options are:
Trump at an ABC News town hall on Tuesday night CDC Director Robert Redfield testified on Capitol Hill on Wednesday
Here’s what these two men said about vaccines over the past 48 hours:
It’s only a matter of weeks!
“If you want to know the truth, the previous administration would have taken maybe years to have a vaccine because of the FDA and all the approvals, and we are within weeks of getting it.”
It will be a long time before most people can get the vaccine.
“If you ask me when will it generally be available to the American public, so that we can start enjoying the vaccine to get back to our normal lives, I think we’re probably looking at the third, the end of the second trimester., Third quarter 2021. “
2. Do I have to wear a face mask?
The options here are, again:
Here’s what these two men said separately about face masks over the past 48 hours:
Up to you.
“The concept of a mask is good, but it also does … you touch it constantly, you touch your face, you touch plates. There are people who don’t think masks are good.”
“I could even go so far as to say that this face mask is safer to protect me from Covid than when I take a Covid vaccine, because the immunogenicity can be 70%.”
3. What can you do to help the economy?
The options this time are:
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell
The economy is doing well.
“When you look at what’s going on in the country and everything we’ve done, unfortunately we’ve been hit by this scourge, but it’s going to come back very soon. We’ve opened it up… We’re going to have a great economy there ‘next year, and I think we’re going to have a great economy in the third quarter. “
You can wear a mask and social distancing to save the economy.
“We all have a role to play in our country’s response to the pandemic. By following the advice of public health professionals, maintaining appropriate social distances and wearing masks in public will help get the economy back in shape. recovery is unlikely until people are convinced that it is safe to re-engage in a wide range of activities.
4. How well should the United States test for Covid?
The options here are:
We are testing too much.
“We have 20% of the cases due to the fact that we do a lot more testing. If we weren’t doing testing, you wouldn’t have cases. You would have very few cases.”
We need more testing.
“We are not recommending less testing. I think more testing will eventually result in fewer cases in this country because it will allow for public health action.”
5. Has the United States Solved Their Covid Problem?
The options here are:
Brett Giroir, health and social services manager in charge of tests
We are on the negative side of the infection curve.
“I really believe we are turning the corner, and I firmly believe it.”
We could lose all of our winnings in an instant.
“Let me say emphatically these gains could be fleeting or even reversed if we do not continue to follow the national plan and exercise personal responsibility, especially by wearing masks and avoiding crowds.”
6. Should people with pre-existing conditions have access to health insurance?
The options here are:
Solicitor General Noel Francisco, appearing before the Supreme Court (This one is from June of this year, not the last 24 hours, but still.)
Of course, we will protect coverage for pre-existing conditions.
“We’re not going to hurt anything having to do with pre-existing conditions. We’re not going to hurt pre-existing conditions. And, in fact, just the opposite.”
The administration is actively trying to end Obamacare without a plan to replace it.
“There is nothing from Congress 2017 to demonstrate that it would have wanted the rest of ACA to continue to function in the absence of these three integral provisions. Therefore, ACA as a whole must fall under the individual mandate.”
7. Does Trump have a health care plan?
The options here are:
White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows
Yes, there is a plan to replace Obamacare, a massive law passed by Congress.
“I have everything ready. I have it all ready.”
There is a plan, but not a replacement law.
“We’ve had to be very, very creative with executive powers to try to figure out what we can do to dramatically impact and reduce health care costs through executive action.
If there is a plan, I haven’t heard of it.
“I am not involved in the replacement plan. I do not know what it is. I give as much public health advice as possible for what this plan would be.
Trump is the first every time, and you’ll notice he’s always diametrically opposed to what his own experts say.
