Boris Johnson appeared to blame Home Secretary Priti Patel for saying she would denounce her neighbors for meeting in groups of more than six, calling it underhanded culture.
The Prime Minister suggested he was uncomfortable spying on his neighbors, but said everyone should act responsibly to abide by the Rule of Six, which bans gatherings in England from more than six people, inside and out, to contain the coronavirus.
He said the sun: I have never been much in favor of underhand culture myself. Obviously, what people should do in the first place is if they are concerned, is to raise it with their friends and neighbors.
But I think what is reasonable for anyone to do is if they think there is a serious threat to public health due to the activities of their neighbors if there is a big sort of party. Animal House taking place, as I’m sure, spas and so on, and there is a serious threat to public health, so it’s reasonable for the authorities to know.
When asked if he would report his neighbor at 11 Downing Street, Chancellor Rishi Sunak, if he saw him breaking the rules in their shared garden, he replied: I can’t imagine that possibility. I have seen Rishi many times in the garden carefully observing the advice. Meticulously!
Patel told the BBC on Tuesday that two families of four stopping to chat on the street would break England’s six restrictions rule and be a mix.
You have to put that in the context of the coronavirus and keep the distance, wear masks, Patel told Radio 4s Today. The rule of six is to make sure that people are conscientious and do not put the health of others at risk.
She said she would speak out against neighbors or any other group she saw flouting the restrictions, which went into effect on Monday.
People face fines of up to 3,200 if they break the rule, following an increase in coronavirus cases.
Patel also told Sky News: I’m rarely home, but if I saw something that I thought was inappropriate then, quite frankly, I would call the police. It’s not dobbing in the neighbors, it’s all about us taking personal responsibility.
Police Minister Kit Malthouse on Monday urged people to denounce their neighbors for breaking the rule of six.
New restrictions on social contact between households and a 10pm curfew in pubs are expected to be introduced in parts of north-east England in an attempt to curb the increase in cases.
Nick Forbes, the head of Newcastle City Council, has confirmed that additional temporary restrictions are planned to prevent another full lockdown of the area.
