Kurdish journalists call for support after border arrest
JOURNALISTS of the Mesopotamia Agency (MA) called for solidarity after the imprisonment of one of his reporters, arrested at the Greek border with Turkey, where he documented the crisis of refugees.
Idris Sayilgan was charged with attempting to cross the Greek border in defiance of a court-imposed travel ban abroad.
He was taken into police custody on Sunday with his colleague journalist from MA, Naci Kaya, who is still in detention despite the fact that a court has ordered his release.
A number of international journalists were also arrested yesterday, including Reuters reporter MarkoDurika and Chris McGarth of Getty Images.
Yesterday, in court by videoconference, Mr. Sayligan explained: We were not filming in a remote area. I didn't realize it was a military zone. They detained us while we filmed the refugees. We would get permission if we knew it was a prohibited military zone.
We were broadcasting live and conducting interviews. I was there to write a report, not to go to Greece. Other journalists have been arrested with us. They were all released. I request my release.
The court refused his release and warned that he would consider the information the agency had brought back from the region as evidence. He was taken to the famous high security Type F closed prison.
Turkey is the largest jailer of journalists in the world, with a third of the world total. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has a hold similar to that of the national press, having shut down hundreds of media organizations and taking control of many others.
Journalists from the Mesopotamia Agency are frequently targeted by the state: around 30 are currently behind bars, many of them accused of terrorism.
